Major Bequest to Establish the Jack Stewart Scholarship Endowment

The Jack Stewart Scholarship Fund at the Yale School of Art will provide financial aid support for graduate students helping the most promising artists to enroll at Yale and pursue their passion upon graduation unburdened by debt.

The gift intention of $1,000,000 is established by his wife, the artist Regina Serniak Stewart. Mrs. Stewart understood the profound influence his studies at Yale had made on Jack’s life (BFA 1951), and wanted to honor his memory by allowing other aspiring artists the opportunity to attend Yale.

Financial aid is a critical priority for the School of Art and it is grateful to Regina Stewart for her major memorial bequest. Stewart’s bequest builds upon a 2018 gift to the School of Art from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation which created a Helen Frankenthaler Endowed Scholarship Fund. Together, these scholarships constitute meaningful form of intergenerational support from artists for artists.

150th Spring Lecture Recap: Designers Sheila de Bretteville & Laura Coombs on gender & identity

Documentation of the public conversation between Sheila Levrant de Bretteville (left) and Laura Coombs (right) on January 22, 2020, New Haven, CT. Photos by Ronghui Chen, Photography MFA ‘21.

In a cross-generational conversation, renowned designer, Caroline M. Street Professor of Graphic Design, and Woman’s Building co-founder Sheila Levrant de Bretteville, and New Museum Senior Designer and recent alumnus, Laura Coombs engaged audience members in conversation to reveal a range of perspectives with regard to gender, design, and the diversity of ways designers and artists find, and ultimately become themselves, through their work.

In a presentation of her and her students’ work, de Bretteville touched on her own seminal contributions to contemporary feminist design. This year marks the beginning of de Bretteville’s third decade as Director of the School’s Graphic Design program, during which time she has mentored hundreds of students like Coombs, who each in their own way are continuing to shape, change and develop the trajectory of this ever-expanding field.

Future events and initiatives celebrating the School of Art's 150th year will be announced throughout summer and fall 2020. Visit art.yale.edu/150th for all announcements and information regarding upcoming anniversary programs.
