CIF at COP27

 

This year’s Conference of the Parties in Sharm-El-Sheik homed in on climate finance with CIF’s team spotlighting industry decarbonization, nature-based solutions, youth, gender and Indigenous empowerment, and just energy transitions while participating in more than 30 events and countless bilateral meetings.


Launched: Industry Decarbonization investment program

CIF’s latest investment program, Industry Decarbonization, was launched during COP27 to take on the challenge of reducing the carbon footprint of high-emitting industries such as iron and steel, cement, chemicals and petrochemicals, aluminum, and pulp and paper. This program aims to facilitate the shift of the industrial sector to more sustainable business practices and unlock the investments needed to embrace a low-carbon, climate-resilient pathway.   


 

First participants selected for Nature, People and Climate investment program

CIF announced the first round of recipients to its Nature, People and Climate investment program for nature-based solutions to the climate crisis. NPC investments will focus on promoting and protecting natural environments integral to climate action, sustainable agriculture and food supply, healthy forests, resilient coastal systems, and empowers Indigenous peoples and local communities. The program aims to support the first group of participating countries, after they present investment plans, to meet some of their most pressing climate challenges, as outlined below. 


Integrating disaster risk management in climate action

Climate-related disasters have almost doubled in the last 20 years. Disaster risk management is essential to resilience against future climate, environmental and global economic risks and shocks. CIF understands that disaster risk management (DRM) is essential to resilience against future climate, environmental, and global economic risks and shocks, and has been responding accordingly. 



Collaboratively building a partnership for transformational change

Incremental changes to how countries and communities address the climate crisis are no longer enough. The urgency and complexity of climate change and its impacts require a more fundamental and transformational change. TCLP partners shared their thoughts during the recent workshop on building a strategic plan to support transformational change through climate finance 



CIF’s Accelerating Coal Transition in the news

At the end of October, CIF’s Governing Board opened the door for South Africa and Indonesia to receive $500 million each for a just transition from coal to clean. This announcement received much media attention including from Reuters, The Financial Times, Bloomberg, and Devex to name a few.

Enablers: the role of enabling environment in scaling up climate finance

 

CIF’s lessons learned on the crucial role of technical assistance have been collected and analyzed in a new report by KPMG. The research lays out key findings and recommendations from an analysis of over 50 CIF-financed projects.
