Climate Finance Investing in our Planet

CIF marked the 52nd Earth Day with a campaign to show how climate finance can unlock the power of nature-based solutions to combat our climate crisis. Drawing on the April edition of the IPCC 2022 report, which acknowledged the potential for nature programs to build resilience and mitigate for climate change, the campaign highlighted the remarkable achievements of the Forest Investment Program (FIP) and the Pilot Project for Climate Resilience (PPCR) as a launchpad to communicate the aims of our new Nature, People and Climate initiative. Multiple content pieces were launched across all CIF channels calling for immediate and accelerated investment actions to support the most vulnerable communities and ecosystems.

Unleashing the Power of
Nature-based Solutions

The April edition of the IPCC – Mitigation for Climate Change 2022 report described human activities in the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sectors as accounting for up to 21% of the world’s anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions between 2010-2019. It also recognized the potential for these areas of human activity to provide large-scale carbon storage and emissions reductions, calling for the rapid deployment of nature-based mitigation measures. The time is right for CIF’s new Nature, People and Climate program.

CIF Appoints a Leading Authority on Environmental Strategy to Helm Nature Solutions Programs

CIF has announced the arrival of Paul Hartman, an environmental strategist and program developer, whose experience spans two decades of stand-out achievements. Paul has been recruited to helm our new Nature, People and Climate program and joins us from the Global Environment Facility where he led the strategic design and roll out of their $346m Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration Impact Program - which works to reduce deforestation, mitigate GHG emissions, and diminish biodiversity loss in 27 countries. Paul describes a mixture of optimism, excitement, and trepidation as he prepares for the role ahead.

Climate Finance Investing in our Planet – it shouldn’t cost the Earth

The ‘to do’ list for securing global net zero by 2050, expands across multiple frontlines. Coming into sharper focus in April, in the run up to Earth Day, were Nature-Based Solutions.  The tasks to achieve in this area include reversing deforestation, reversing climate degradations in our ecosystems, and phasing out unsustainable land management practices. To successfully complete all these tasks we must first secure the right capital, on the right terms, right now. There’s a lot to do. Climate finance can and must unlock our collective ability to get on with doing it. Learn how the Pilot Program for Climate Resilience, the Climate Investment Funds’ $1.2 billion portfolio supporting climate change adaptation and resilience across 84 maturing projects is pioneering the way for future nature programs to follow.

UN convention on Biological Diversity Negotiations Reveal a Clear Role for the Climate Investment Funds Programs

With the aim of achieving a Paris-type climate agreement for nature, several national governments, intergovernmental scientific bodies, and other stakeholders convened in Geneva for the United Nations (UN) Convention on Biological Diversity. Set against the backdrop of stark biodiversity loss assessments from the scientific community, the delegates arrived with the goal of refining the draft of a ‘Global Biodiversity Framework’ for final presentation at the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in China later this year – where it must be agreed and adopted. The scale of the ambitions in the draft framework suggests a leading role for CIF’s nature-based programs.

Transformational Climate Finance: How can multi-stakeholder finance models drive rapid and just responses to the climate crisis?

The gap between available public financing and the resources needed to address the causes and impacts of climate change raises an important question; how to effectively leverage our limited resources to create multi-sectoral transformational change?  A key challenge is to find creative approaches that catalyze shifts in mainstream private capital investment flows to support just climate solutions. This public webinar will explore new thinking on opportunities and emerging models for multi-partner finance to unlock and shape transformational investments in climate action.
