Climate Finance is Advancing
Women Climate Leadership

March 8th was International Women’s Day (IWD), where communities and organizations called for a gender equal world that was bias-free, equitable, and inclusive. CIF stands in solidarity with IWD and celebrates women leadership in climate finance with a holistic investment model - providing inclusive climate financing and tackling the imbalances of power for a more equal, gender-transformative approach to low carbon and climate resilient development. CIF is focused on facilitating gender-equal access to climate financing and decision making. Through new program designs, CIF is stepping up its commitment to women climate leadership; working to identify and address structural, institutional, and normative barriers to equal participation of women.

From February to March, CIF will be showcasing some of its gender work on its website and social media. Stay tuned for more stories from those spaces.

Gender Action in Haiti and the Maldives – How CIF Aims to Achieve Gender Balance in Renewable Energy

New CIF initiatives in Haiti and the Maldives are breaking down structural and cultural gender barriers and helping to create a model for female climate leadership in governance and green growth. In the Maldives, the POISED project is working to install renewable energy hybrid systems, while promoting women employment, training, and project decision making. In Haiti, projects are expanding and improving access to clean electricity - promoting gender equality through improved health, education, and employment access for women.

A Call to Action - More Adaptation, More Climate Finance

The new IPCC report states that ‘climate change is a grave and mounting threat to [people’s] wellbeing and a healthy planet’. And while the situation is dire, the one bright light is that climate finance has the power to scale climate adaptation solutions to counter our global vulnerabilities. And CIF’s Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR) and the Clean Technology (CTF) Fund are referenced as successful examples of a programmatic approach that provide flexible, secure, highly concessional, and effective finance to support developing countries with their climate strategies.

Improving Climate Data and Information Management in Jamaica

CIF’s $6.8M Pilot Program for Climate Resilience in Jamaica is helping residents prepare for increasingly volatile and extreme climate events. The program is focused on upgrading compromised hydrological and meteorological infrastructure and data systems. So far it has installed a fully operational Doppler Weather Radar and is working on 18 automatic weather stations (AWSs) and two sea-level tide gauges. Learn what other projects are underway
