The Bible and the Qur’an, a short course for beginners

January and February

The Bible and the Qur’an are source works for billions of Christians and Muslims worldwide, though for the followers of these great religious traditions the scripture of the other faith is nearly always literally a closed book.

This short course is intended to introduce some of the history of the Qur’an and its central teachings, and to examine the relationship between the two scriptures that share so many features and contents. The course stretches over a few weeks through January and February and the speaker will be Professor David Thomas, Canon Theologian:

•    How can Christians understand Muhammad? Chapter Room, 6:15pm 5th Feb.
•    God and Jesus in the Qur’an and Bible: Glastonbury Retreat House, 10.30am-4pm, 19th Feb. Cost £18.50 to include a sandwich lunch.

To sign up, send your name and email address to Professor David Thomas.

YMCA Sleep Easy 2020 at Wells Cathedral

6 March 2020, #YMCASleepEasy

We challenge you to take part in Sleep Easy 2020 at the foot of the magnificent West Front of Wells Cathedral, on Friday 6th from 7pm to 7am on Saturday 7th of March 2020!

Sleeping rough so others don’t have to. Hundreds of young people every year spend at least one night on the streets. For every rough sleeper you may see in the community, there are dozens more who are sofa surfing, sleeping in cars, or on the move night after night. Shocking new research has revealed that a homeless person is dying every 19 hours in austerity Britain.

This year you can join Sleep Easy as an individual, a family or by taking part in the Sleep Easy 2020 Team Challenge. There are 3 categories: Business – School – Parish. Build your cardboard shelter and sleep rough at the foot of West Front of Wells Cathedral. We will offer hot refreshments, a warm fire, team games, toilets and a covered area for families with children under 12.

The Dean, John Davies, is going to be taking part in the Sleep Easy 2020 Team Challenge with other members of the Cathedral! Find out more and sign up using the link below.

Wells Cathedral - Just Giving

Wells Cathedral was ranked as England’s no.1 cathedral recently in The Guardian. This “most poetic of England’s cathedrals” is here for everyone, its doors open to all; the Cathedral works continuously to conserve, enhance and interpret its buildings and its work so it may be enjoyed and enrich lives in this and in future generations. However the Cathedral receives no regular funding from the Government or the Church of England towards maintenance, restoration and development work. It costs £4,500 a day to keep Wells Cathedral open and funds must be raised through our own endeavours and with the vital help of visitors, congregations and supporters.

If you would like to make a contribution please follow the link below to visit the Cathedral’s JustGiving page – thank you for your support.

Chained Library Featured Book of the Month – February

SPENCE, John   Polymetis: or an enquiry concerning the agreement between the works of the Roman poets and the remains of the antient artists  (1747)

John Spence (1699-1768) was the son of a Precentor of Winchester Cathedral and took holy orders himself in 1726 after graduating from Oxford. His main interest was poetry and Alexander Pope became his mentor. This led to him becoming Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1728.

From 1737 to 1741 he travelled widely in Europe with aristocratic companions and developed a thorough grasp of the Classics and of the published literature on classical antiquity. Polymetis is the result of this research with its focus on the relationship between the art and the literature of classical Greece and Rome correlating literary references to Roman deities with visual representations of the same gods on gems and coins. There are ample accompanying indices and the volume’s forty-one plates, engraved by L.P. Boitard, illustrate sculptures, gems and coins referred to in the text.

Amnesty Victim of Injustice for February - Greece

Sarah Mardini was one of a team of trained rescuers who offered help to refugee boats, which were in distress in Greek waters.  They tried to keep the people calm as they handed out water and blankets.  After two years of volunteering Sarah Mardini was on her way back to college in Germany when she was arrested.  Her colleague Seán Binder, who went to the police station to enquire about her, was also arrested.  The pair spent 100 days in prison, charged with spying, people smuggling and belonging to a criminal organisation.  They were released on bail in December 2018.  If found guilty, they could be in prison for 25 years.
