Departure of WCRP JPS Acting Director Deon Terblanche
From July 2017 to April 2018, Deon Terblanche served as Acting Director of the WCRP Joint Planning Staff (JPS) in Geneva. He carried out these duties in addition to his principal role as Director of WMO's Atmospheric Research and Environment (ARE) Branch.
His former colleagues and the entire WCRP community wish him all the best for the future and thank Deon for his competence, dedication, and collegiality.
On 1 September 2018, Pavel Kabat will join as both WMO Chief Scientist and WMO Director of Research - see the announcement directly below.

Incoming WMO Chief Scientist and Director of Research, Pavel Kabat, receives Austrian Cross of Honor
After the departure of WCRP Acting Director Deon Terblanche, WMO’s upcoming Chief Scientist and Director of Research, Professor Pavel Kabat, will take office on 1 September 2018. His duties will include management of WCRP and its Joint Planning Staff.
At a celebratory farewell event on 26 June at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), where Pavel will be leaving his current posts of Director General and Chief Executive Officer, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for his achievements and service.

The CORDEX vision is to advance and coordinate the science and application of regional climate downscaling through global partnerships. CORDEX is a global, bottom-up driven, collaborative initiative which aims to develop and provide detailed, regional climate information required by society. Nominations open for 2018 "WCRP/WWRP International Prize for Model Development" and "WCRP/GCOS International Data Prize"
WCRP is awarding annually, together with its two respective partners WWRP and GCOS, two prizes for notable achievements in model as well as data development. The prizes honour research activities in their respective fields, as well as stress their mutual interdependence. For the 2018 edition of both prizes, nominations are now open with a deadline of 1 October 2018. See both announcements in full on the WCRP homepage.

|
|
The 70th Executive Council Session of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO, one of WCRP's three co-sponsors) took place from 20 to 29 June 2018. Find some highlights below, and the complete news coverage on the WMO News and Press pages.

KMA and WMO sign agreement
on S2S Prediction Project's second phase
During the 70th Session of WMO's Executive Council, the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) signed an agreement around the second phase of the S2S Prediction Project. The KMA agreed to continue to host the S2S International Coordination Office during the Project's second phase. WCRP is, together with the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP), one of the founding entities of the S2S Project, which aims to improve predictions at sub-seasonal to seasonal timescales. Abstract Deadline extended to 13 July for WCRP workshop:
"Earth’s Energy Imbalance and its implications"
WCRP is organizing a workshop on "The Earth’s Energy Imbalance and its implications" (EEI) in Toulouse, France, from 13-16 November 2018. Abstracts are invited until 13 July 2018. The workshop's main aim is to initiate a new WCRP-wide activity on Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI) with broad participation from both within and beyond WCRP's related initiatives. The "Conferences on Subseasonal to Decadal Prediction”:
Promoting seamlessness across timescales and communities
WCRP and the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) are jointly organizing the "International Conferences on Subseasonal to Decadal Prediction" in Boulder, USA, on 17-21 September 2018. You can learn about the conference aims in a conference background article, stay informed on the conference homepage, and read a recent journal article on "closing the gap between weather and climate predictions".

CLIVAR and CIIFEN, together with the conference sponsors, are organizing the fourth "International Conference on El Niño Southern Oscillation: ENSO in a Warmer Climate", to be held in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on 16-18 October 2018. The conference will address ENSO scientific challenges in the context of international climate research, assessments, and operational prediction efforts. Abstract submission is closed, registration remains open on the conference website.

WCRP participation at SBSTA-48
and the 10th Research Dialogue
WCRP was represented at the forty-eighth session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA-48), held from 30 April to 10 May 2018 in Bonn, Germany, including its tenth Research Dialogue meeting (RD-10). The WCRP Community informed SBSTA of relevant research activities and emerging science issues through a keynote talk and five poster presentations. Read the full report on the WCRP homepage.

2nd WCRP Summer School
on Climate Model Development
The 2nd WCRP Summer School on Climate Model Development was held in Cachoeira Paulista, Brazil, from 22-31 January, hosted by the Brazil National Institute for Space Research, Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies (INPE/CPTEC). Read the full Summer School Report on the WCRP homepage.

Joint YESS-YHS Early Career Researcher Workshop
“Towards Regional Information to Improve Our Understanding on Weather, Water, and Climate Extreme Events”
In conjunction with the 8th GEWEX Open Science Conference held in early May in Canmore, Canada, a joint workshop for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) was convened by the Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) community and the Young Hydrologic Society (YHS), with support from WCRP, GEWEX, and WMO. International Science Council
officially launched, completing ICSU-ISSC merger
The International Council for Science (ICSU) has been one of the three co-sponsors of WCRP since the founding of WCRP in 1980. Early this month, ICSU has officially merged with the International Social Science Council (ISSC) into the International Science Council (ISC). All reports on the merger and kick-off events are available from the newly launched ISC web pages: www.council.science .

Call for Abstracts: Special Issue on
“Urban Data and Climate Information Services”
After the Cities and Climate Change Science Conference had taken place in Canada this March with WCRP support and involvement, abstracts are now invited to a special issue on "Urban Data and Climate Information Services". Scheduled to appear in the journal "Urban Climate", abstract proposals are invited until 15 July 2018. For more information, see the corresponding WCRP news article.

- The Belmont Forum issued a call on "Science-driven e-Infrastructure Innovation (SEI) for the Enhancement of Transnational, Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Data Use in Environmental Change". See the announcements on the Belmont Forum homepage and grant operations system (deadline 16 July).
- The IPCC invites nominations for Expert Reviewers for the First Order Draft of its "Special Report on Climate Change and Land (SRCCL)", with registration possible until 29 July. See the full announcement; the expert registration form; and the SRCCL homepage.
- A PAGES working group on "PALeo constraints on SEA level rise" (PALSEA) has recently been approved for a three-year extension, with the next phase to launch in January 2019. Read about the group's previous activities, future aims, and sign up to the mailing list on the PALSEA homepage.
- PAGES has recently established a working group on "Cycles of Sea-Ice Dynamics in the Earth system" (C-SIDE). The group will hold their first workshop on "Developing Data and Modeling Capacity to Understand Past Changes in Sea Ice in the Southern Ocean” in Vancouver, Canada, from 24-26 October 2018.
- Future Earth announced an open call "PEGASuS 2: Ocean Sustainability" for projects focusing on synthesis research for ocean sustainability (Deadline: 6 August).
- The SOLAS Open Science Conference, to be held 21-25 April 2019 in Sapporo, Japan, is accepting abstract submissions until 15 November.
- SOLAS has published Version 2 of its Implementation Strategy.
- The Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP) is organizing an Arctic Science Workshop to be held from 14 to 16 January in Helsinki, Finland (Deadline: 3 September).
- SCOR is requesting comments on proposals received for the establishment of new SCOR working groups, by 1 August 2018.
