The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is having a profound impact on many people, both personally and professionally. The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) looks at the challenges that we currently face and the opportunities that we have for the future. Read more here.
WCRP Hamburg Workshop outcomes
Lighthouse
In February 2020, WCRP held a workshop in Hamburg to discuss the implementation priorities and potential new "Lighthouse Activities" for the Programme. These are exciting new directions for WCRP, which will now be discussed and built on within the WCRP community. To find out more, read the full report here.
Call for proposals to host a
Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Office
WCRP is calling for proposals to host a dedicated project office to support Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) activities and its overall coordination. The deadline for proposals is 31 August 2020. For more information, see the Call for Proposals.
Insights into the YESS Community activities for 2020
YESS Community
The Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) Community is planning for the future, with a newly elected leadership and a Strategic Action Plan under consultation. In response to COVID-19, the YESS community invites you to attend a series of online activities to share your science and to encourage scientific interaction. Learn more here.
Regional climate projections and applications
Esplanade Hotel Fremantle
Jason Evans reports on a session on "regional climate projections and applications" at the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Annual Conference last February. The session highlighted progress in the CORDEX-Australasia domain as well as featuring presentations from a cross-section of projects/studies developing and using regional climate projections. Find out more here.
WCRP 40th Anniversary Symposium photo
Those of you who attended the WCRP 40th Anniversary Symposium in San Francisco last December may remember that a photo was taken of a number of the participants. Hans Volkert (Director of SPARC) has done a phenomenal job of annotating the image with almost all of the names of those present. Click on the image below to link to the latest version of the photo on the WCRP website. Information for the not yet identified persons and corrections should be sent to Hans.Volkert@DLR.de.
WCRP 40th Anniversary
2019 WCRP CliC Annual Report
CliC Annual Report 2019
The WCRP Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) Project announces the publication of its Annual Report for 2019. It was another productive year for the CliC community and the CliC Annual Report highlights some of the progress and achievements made during the past year. The report gives an overview of CliC activities in 2019 and includes contributions from all of the CliC Projects/Groups Leads and from the WCRP Grand Challenge on “Melting Ice and Global Consequences.“ Find out more here.
IndOOS-2: Roadmap to Sustained Observations
of the Indian Ocean for 2020-2030
IndOOS-2
The IndOOS-2 report was jointly published by CLIVAR and GOOS in 2019. The IndOOS-2 roadmap is the outcome of a four-year review of the Indian Ocean Observing System, which was initiated at the 2016 Ocean Observations Panel for Climate meeting and which involved more than 60 scientific experts. The next step is to implement an IndOOS-2 that can meet future societal needs for predictability of Indian Ocean climate and ecosystems across time scales from sub-seasonal to decadal and beyond.
Sir John Houghton: a great loss
WCRP note, with great gratitude and admiration, the life of Sir John Houghton, who passed away last week. He had a long and distinguished career as an atmospheric physicist and leading climate change scientist, including in the formative years of WCRP and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Read more here.
