Message from Guy Brasseur

Chair, WCRP Joint Scientific Committee

As you probably know, David Carlson retired from his position of Executive Director of WCRP on 30 June 2017. Deon Terblanche, Director of the WMO Atmospheric Research and Environment Branch, has agreed to lead the activities of the WCRP Joint Planning Staff for a period of about one year, and to work closely with the Joint Scientific Committee and the climate community towards the development of a new 10-year strategic plan. Read more about future WCRP plans here.

Guy Brasseur

Deon Terblanche

We welcome Deon Terblanche

At the beginning of July Deon Terblanche took over as Acting Director of WCRP. Deon is Director of Research at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and supports the WMO Commission for Atmospheric Sciences. He also oversees the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) and the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Programme.

We look forward to working with Deon to promote WCRP and bring about stronger relationships with our WMO sister programmes.

Sea Level Conference in New York

This week begins with the WCRP Regional Sea Level Changes and Coastal Impacts Conference in New York. The conference puts a spotlight on interactions between global warming, associated sea level rise, coastal impacts and options for adaptation. See the full press release (English) (French) (Spanish). We wish all conference participants a productive and inspiring conference, leading the way forward on this crucial research area.

A Short Introduction to Climate Models - CMIP & CMIP6

Last week we released a video that gives insight into the world of climate modelling, with a focus on WCRP's Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) (see video below). The video, starring ex-Director David Carlson and Gaby Langendijk of the WCRP Joint Planning Staff, stresses the importance of sharing, comparing and analyzing the outcomes of global climate models to deliver high quality climate information. It accompanies an EGU Highlight article, also released last week, entitled 'WCRP’s Coupled Model Intercomparison Project: a remarkable contribution to climate science'. A shorter version of the video is available on the WCRP YouTube Channel.

GEWEX: Global Energy and Water Cycle Exchanges

The Global Energy and Water Cycle Exchanges (GEWEX) project is one of WCRP's four core projects. The global water cycle encompasses the continuous journey of water as it moves between the Earth’s surface, the atmosphere, and beneath the Earth’s surface. Find out more about GEWEX here!
