Robin Runge is a pillar of the workers’ rights clinic run by the Washington Lawyers’ Committee. The Distinguished Professorial Lecturer in Law at the George Washington University Law School not only serves as a volunteer legal advisor to the clinic and supervises her students as intake volunteers, but was also critical to the clinic's foundation. Earlier in her career, Professor Runge was the Deputy Director and Coordinator of the Program on Women's Employment Rights at the organization at which the workers' rights clinic was housed prior to its merger with the Washington Lawyers' Committee.

In addition to teaching, the Fulbright Senior Research Scholar has had a long and storied career as an international expert in gender-based violence and harassment. She has held positions in the US Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division and Civil Rights Center, directed the American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence, established the Domestic Violence and Employment Project at the Legal Aid Society of San Francisco, one of the first in the country, and served on a drafting team for the International Labor Organization's first-ever global labor standard to address violence and harassment in the world of work.

Most recently, Professor Runge and her students volunteered at the clinic's November 4th in-person re-opening at Bread for the City's Michelle Obama Center in the Anacostia neighborhood of the District.

First Amendment Case

Magale Narce is an unhoused street performer who was arrested by DC police for “aggressive panhandling” after the Convention Center complained that he was doing a street performance on public sidewalks in front of the convention center. The WLC and Fish and Richardson, led by Board Member Daniel Tishman, filed a lawsuit on Mr. Narce’s behalf against the DC officers who arrested him without probable cause and in violation of his First Amendment rights to solicit funds on the street. The lawsuit also challenges DC’s Panhandling Control Act because on its face it restricts the ability for people to make a living soliciting money on DC streets. In a big legal win for Mr. Narce, unhoused individuals, and the First Amendment, Judge Beryl Howell ruled that the lawsuit may proceed in its entirety despite the District’s motion to dismiss.
