WLC Fights for Mental Health Services for Incarcerated Individuals

In April 2024, Washington Lawyers’ Committee and Gilbert LLP filed a class action lawsuit against the federal Bureau of Prisons at U.S. Penitentiary Lee (Virginia) for denying necessary mental health care to incarcerated individuals. This lawsuit addresses the systemic neglect and cruel conditions faced by prisoners with mental health needs, arguing that such indifference violates constitutional rights under the Eighth Amendment.

Supreme Court Reviews Anti-Camping Ordinances

On April 22, WLC board member Kelsi Corkran appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court to argue a high-stakes case concerning the constitutionality of anti-camping laws in Grants Pass, Oregon. This critical legal challenge addresses whether local ordinances that penalize unhoused individuals for sleeping in public spaces without shelter alternatives violate the Eighth Amendment. The case could set a national precedent on homelessness, public space management, and the rights of unhoused people.

WLC supports the fight against punitive measures that criminalize homelessness. WLC joined an amicus brief in support of unhoused people: Read the amicus brief.

The Supreme Court decision in Grants Pass is expected in June 2024. For further details on the case and its broader implications, click here.

Covington & Burling Team - Disability Justice Case

WLC honors the large pro bono team at Covington & Burling that represented Philip Ashley, a blind GSA employee who was denied promotions due to inaccessible software. This hotly contested case resulted in years of litigation before resulting in a settlement that compensates Mr. Ashley and funds his professional development.

In Case You Missed It

SCOTUS Workers' Rights Decision, Muldrow v. City of St. Louis. In a victory for workers, the Court unanimously held that an employee challenging a job transfer under Title VII must show that the transfer caused some harm with respect to a term, condition, or privilege of employment, but that harm does not need to be significant. Listen as Hannah Mullen (Associate Counsel at the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights) and Brian Wolfman (Director of the Appellate Courts Immersion Clinic at Georgetown Law) break down the latest victory for workers’ rights in the Supreme Court.

In Memoriam

Lewis S. Wiener, a disability justice champion and former WLC board member and co-chair, died on April 29, 2024. In 2023 Lew was honored with the Wiley A. Branton Award – the highest achievement award bestowed by WLC. As a partner at Eversheds Sutherland (US) LLP, Lew litigated several civil rights pro bono matters with WLC, particularly on behalf of persons with disabilities. Lew also helped to steer WLC into a new chapter of advancing racial justice and achieving human rights impact in Washington, DC, and nationwide. All of us at WLC – staff and board – share our deepest condolences with Alisa and Zach and the large extended Wiener family – many of whom joined us to celebrate Lew at the 2023 Branton pro bono awards luncheon. Read our tribute to Lew Wiener here.

The Wiener family has requested that memorial contributions be made to WLC — to continue Lew’s long-lasting commitment to disability justice and civil rights.
