Eric Holder to Present Branton Award to Vanita Gupta 

At our May 29 Branton Awards Luncheon, we will present the Branton Award to Vanita Gupta, former Associate Attorney General, for outstanding achievement and leadership in civil rights. Gupta was appointed to Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division by then-Attorney General Eric Holder. During her tenure, Gupta collaborated with law enforcement, corrections departments, and politicians across the spectrum to advance criminal justice reform in policing and sentencing. As chief civil rights prosecutor, Gupta oversaw investigations of the Ferguson, Baltimore, and Chicago police departments.

WLC Sues DC for Failing to Provide Safe Reliable Transportation for Children with Disabilities


In March 2024 DC families and The Arc filed a class action against the DC Superintendent of Education for failing to provide safe reliable transportation for children with disabilities. This systemic failure denies disabled students equal access to education. WLC is committed to ensuring that every child can get to and from school safely and on time, so they can learn and thrive.

April 16: DC Emancipation Day

April 16 marks the abolition of slavery in DC. 
 
"The Black people of the District of Columbia have been systematically robbed. While we celebrate the District as the thriving metropolis it is today, it is also marked by profound racial disparities that have stolen Black wealth, power, labor, and lives. In the words of one Ward 7 resident, the District is a 'Tale of Two Cities.'"
