Dear Friend,

The last few weeks have been a painful reminder of how much work is left to be done to create true racial equity in our criminal legal system and in the broader society. Reform of policing, while essential, is but one part of the necessary change that must occur to address four hundred years of oppression. The Washington Lawyers’ Committee is committed to keeping race equity at the core of our work. We stand together with all those who are working for justice.

This newsletter provides an update on recent developments in our work to promote justice. We are grateful for the community of clients, co-counsel, strategic partners and donors that make it possible.

Virginia Agrees to Provide Accessible Absentee Voting Option for Voters with Print Disabilities
Elections in Virginia will permanently be made accessible and safe for voters with disabilities such as blindness. This decision comes in response to our 2020 suit which led Virginia to provide an absentee ballot option that is accessible and can be marked electronically so that voters with disabilities could safely vote in the November 2020 general election.

Together with the School Justice Project and Terris Pravlik & Millian LLP, we filed suit on behalf of two incarcerated students with disabilities and a putative class against the District of Columbia for its failure to provide special education instruction and services during the pandemic. For the approximately 44 students enrolled in DCPS at the DC Jail, all of whom have disabilities and special education needs, DCPS has provided only worksheets since March 2020.

Support the 2021 Associates Campaign. LET'S RALLY TOGETHER Making the most of this moment to dismantle injustice.
On April 1st, we held an Associate Trustee Panel, Investigating the Death of Elijah McClain, featuring Jonathan Smith, Kevin Metz, and Latham & Watkins associates who served as outside pro bono counsel and advised the independent panel. Special thanks to our Associate Trustee Host Committee: Matthew Aiken, Andrea Gordon and Stephanie Miner!
The Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church achieved a significant victory in an initial phase of its lawsuit against the Proud Boys and their leader Enrique Tarrio, after a default ruling declaring that Proud Boys International, LLC forfeited the case. The default ruling is not the end of the plaintiff’s efforts, but a significant step toward holding the Proud Boys accountable. This case was brought together with Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP and the national Lawyers' Committee.
Case Update

This week, our longstanding litigation together with Arnold & Porter and the ACLU of MD against the Prince Georges County Police Department saw a tremendous victory. A federal judge blocked the promotion system in the department which experts showed was plagued with extensive and systemic racial disparities.
