VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SETS 2022 FESTIVAL DATES
AND OPENS CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

VANCOUVER, BC (JANUARY 25, 2022) The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) announced today that its 41st edition will take place from September 29-October 9, 2022. The festival’s film lineup will consist of approximately 120 features and 80 shorts, with every official selection screening in cinemas. Additionally, a curated collection of festival titles will be available for online viewing through the VIFF Connect streaming platform. Submissions for the 2022 event launched also today via FilmFreeway at www.filmfreeway.com/VIFF.

“In 2021, our 40th edition played a critical role in reigniting film culture in Vancouver and throughout British Columbia,” said Kyle Fostner, VIFF’s Executive Director. “We brought the world’s most exciting films to screens throughout the city and to partner venues elsewhere in the province through our VIFF Expanded initiative. We look forward to building on these successes with our 2022 festival.”

VIFF 2022 will include films from every corner of the globe, welcome dozens of filmmakers, and foster enlightening dialogue about the work being showcased. In addition to distinguishing itself with its dynamic balance of narratives and documentaries, VIFF also screens the best of new Canadian cinema. At the 2021 edition, 64 Canadian features and shorts played in competition, with 53% of those selections by female directors and 46% by filmmakers who were Indigenous, Black, or people of colour.

“Events of the past two years have resulted in remarkably resourceful work imbued with a renewed sense of urgency,” said Curtis Woloschuk, VIFF’s Associate Director of Programming. “We recognize that the art and exhibition of cinema finds itself at a critical juncture and are excited about exploring new ways of championing artists and engaging audiences.”

In addition to the extensive film program, the 2022 festival will include VIFF’s world-class talks, conferences, and live events that celebrate film and film culture. These will include the long-running Totally Indie Day, which offers key insights to the next generation of filmmakers insights, and VIFF AMP, which allows musicians and composers to explore creative opportunities in the world of film and television. Other creative development opportunities include the VIFF Catalyst mentorship program, which emboldens emerging filmmakers through facilitated sessions and one-on-one mentorships. Meanwhile, VIFF Talks engage directors, writers, and showrunners in conversations that enhance understanding of acclaimed cinematic storytelling.
