Best of 2018: Upending Narratives, Expanding Access, & Serving the Underserved

The Department of Veterans' Services made tremendous strides in our second full year of operations culminating in the Veterans Day launch of our first major procurement initiative, VetConnectNYC. 2018 saw a renewal in our ongoing commitment to upending the prevailing narratives which surround veterans, expanding and streamlining access to resources, services, & care, and in ensuring traditionally underserved military populations received the attention they so rightfully deserve.

Highlight: DVS Launches Podcast

DVS launched its brand new podcast, SITREP. The podcast is a bi-weekly show which aims to inform and inspire by telling the stories of New York City veterans, military families, and community supporters. Guest interviews feature candid conversations with DVS staff, constituents, and community partners about their trials & triumphs, motivations for service, and the things they'd like all New Yorkers to know.

Affordable Housing Ambassador Training
DVS partnered with the NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development to host a Housing Ambassador Training. Representatives from public, private, and non-profit organizations learned the ins & outs of navigating NYC's affordable housing market.

City Hall in Your Borough: Manhattan
DVS Community Services Coordinator Donnell Simon spoke with veterans at the CHiYB: City Resource Fair at the Milbank Center. The event provided constituents an opportunity to meet with top officials from City Hall and other NYC agencies.

Queens Borough Veterans Career Fair
DVS Community Services Coordinator Tanya Thomas engaged with veterans at the career fair sponsored by DCAS, DVS, and Councilman Daneek Miller. Queens Public Library hosted the event which provided constituents with resources for careers in City government.

"New Year, New You" Speed-Achieving Event

The New York City Veterans Alliance hosts this speed-networking styled event where participants spend short bursts chatting with organizations about how they can help you achieve your goals -- ranging from physical fitness to career & education support, civic engagement, and a whole lot more.

Your Brain on the Military: Women Veterans
