Flagging Ceremony at Woodlawn Cemetery

The NYC Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS) invites you to a Memorial Day flagging ceremony at the Woodlawn Cemetery on Saturday, May 29th. Guests will be given American flags to place on the graves of the 8,500 veterans resting at the cemetery. Speakers will include DVS Commissioner James Hendon and State Senator Jamaal Bailey.

Join us as we honor and give thanks to those who responded to their nation’s call to duty.

The ceremony also marks the placement of a pop-up exhibit for the DVS Veteran Voices Project, a program that collects oral histories of New York City veterans from World War II through the present day.  Attendees could follow a barcode to listen to some of the more than 50 stories collected so far. The pop-up exhibit will be on display through summer 2021.

The ceremony is hosted by DVS, the Woodlawn Cemetery, and the Bob Woodruff Foundation. American flags have been donated by the Bob Woodruff Foundation. The Bob Woodruff Foundation has also donated 27,000 flags to be distributed across the five boroughs for placement at veteran gravesites.

Please note: This event will follow COVID-19 safety protocols.
“Memorial Day is a time to reflect on those throughout America’s history who sacrificed to protect the freedoms that we enjoy. Those who served asked for little and carried the same dreams and aspirations as those living today. Instead of fulfilling those aspirations, their lives were cut short in defense of their country.” - James Hendon, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services

Ending Veteran Homelessness in NYC

Over the past five years, our housing team has moved over 1,000 veterans from shelters and into permanent housing. Learn more about DVS's efforts to end veteran homelessness in NYC here.

Making Calls to Veterans Across NYC

As part of Mission: VetCheck, volunteers call NYC veterans to provide information about essential services, including free meals, COVID-19 testing, and mental health resources.

Helping File VA Claims

Many veterans living in NYC are eligible for, but do not receive, their Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits. That's why DVS is representing veterans and their families in claims for benefits. To schedule an online appointment with a member of our VA Claims Team, please submit your information to VetConnectNYC.

Veteran Voices Project: Oral History Initiative

DVS has captured the oral history of NYC veterans representing every branch and service era. From World War 2 to COVID-19, hear stories of service across generations on our Veteran Voices Project library
