Honoring Veterans Ahead of 
Memorial Day Ceremony

This week, DVS Commissioner James Hendon joined Cub Scout Pack 520 to place American flags at the graves of veterans interred at Woodlawn Cemetery. Thank you to all who joined us in honoring our fallen heroes. On Saturday, May 29th, DVS will host a Memorial Day ceremony to place flags at the remaining veteran graves at Woodlawn Cemetery. The event is open to the public. See below for more information, including how to RVSP:

The ceremony is a partnership between DVS, the Woodlawn Cemetery, and the Bob Woodruff Foundation. Thank you to the Bob Woodruff Foundation for donating 27,000 flags for placement at veteran gravesites at Woodlawn Cemetery and across NYC.

Mental Health Resources

As we honor those we've lost this Memorial Day weekend, please take a moment to reflect on your mental health. Below are a series of resources for anyone who is struggling or experiencing a mental health crisis.

If you are having thoughts of suicide or hurting others, or experiencing an emotional crisis, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room for immediate assistance. You may also call the
 Veterans’ Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 and press 1.

Check-in Calls

DVS's Mission: VetCheck offers supportive check-in calls to veterans across NYC. Request a check-in call for you or a veteran you know by contacting VetCheck@veterans.nyc.gov or by visiting the Mission: VetCheck website.

Counseling Services

  • Headstrong is treating current and new veteran clients.
  • NYU Steven Cohen Family Center provides free care for veterans and military families who are experiencing the long-term effects of military service.
  • VA Vet Centers are community-based counseling centers that provide a wide range of social and psychological services, including professional readjustment counseling to eligible veterans, active duty service members, including National Guard and Reserve components, and their families.
  • For additional online counseling and therapy services designed for veterans, visit OnlineTherapy.com.

Veteran Peer Support

  • The Objective Zero app gives veterans access to mental health resources and a peer support network.

  • Vets4Warriors provides veterans, family members, and caregivers with 24/7 help from a confidential peer support network. Receive immediate, free, and long-term peer support through private chats, emails, phone, and text conversations.
  • Stop Soldier Suicide connects veterans with a Wellness Coordinator who provides personalized attention and develops wellness plans that are customized to address a veteran's specific needs.

Support Lines

  • NYC Well is a confidential helpline for mental health and substance abuse services. Trained counselors provide 24/7 support. To reach NYC Well, call 888-NYC-WELL or text WELL to 65173.
  • NY Project Hope provides support for those struggling with life during the pandemic. Call 844-863-9314.

Put Your Veteran-Owned Business on the Map

DVS is launching an online interactive map that will help New Yorkers find VOBs in their community. Veterans business owners can add their information to the upcoming VOB map here.

Feeding Veterans in Need

DVS partnered with GetFoodNYC to help deliver food to homebound veterans. We're also working to distribute HelloFresh meals to veteran families. Request food or learn how to volunteer to prepare meal kits by submitting your information to VetConnectNYC.

Helping File VA Claims

Many veterans living in NYC are eligible for, but do not receive, their Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits. That's why DVS is representing veterans and their families in claims for benefits. To schedule an online appointment with a member of our VA Claims Team, please submit your information to VetConnectNYC.

Veteran Voices Project: Oral History Initiative

DVS has captured the oral history of NYC veterans representing every branch and service era. From World War 2 to COVID-19, hear stories of service across generations on our Veteran Voices Project library

Ending Veteran Homelessness in NYC

Over the past five years, our housing team has moved over 1,000 veterans from shelters and into permanent housing. Learn more about DVS's efforts to end veteran homelessness in NYC here.
