NYC Department of Veterans' Services:
A Year-End Review

Making supportive calls. Distributing face masks. Preparing meal kits. Housing the homeless. Processing VA benefit claims. Watch to learn how NYC supported veterans throughout 2020.

At the start of the pandemic, the NYC Department of Veterans' Services (DVS) developed a proactive plan to continue providing the highest quality of care to the City's veteran community. Read about the services and initiatives DVS developed in response to the challenges of 2020:

Feeding Veterans in Need

One of the largest concerns facing New Yorkers during the pandemic is food insecurity. To address this need, DVS partnered with GetFoodNYC to help deliver meal kits to homebound veterans. In addition, DVS collaborated with the NYS Division of Veteran Servicesthe Campaign Against Hunger, and Black Veterans for Social Justice to distribute 350 to 400 HelloFresh food kits to veteran households per week. Since July, DVS helped to sort and deliver over 25,000 meal bags.

Reaching Out to Veterans Across NYC

To reduce social isolation for veterans during the pandemic, DVS and ThriveNYC launched Mission: VetCheck. As part of this initiative, volunteers call NYC veterans to provide information about essential services, including free meals, COVID-19 testing, and mental health resources. Since launching, the program has placed over 18,000 supportive phone calls to veterans and their families.

Helping File VA Claims

During this time of economic crisis and high unemployment, it’s vital that veterans get the financial benefits they’ve earned. However, approximately 6,692 veterans living in NYC are eligible for, but do not receive, their Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits. To address this issue, DVS staff members are now representing NYC veterans and their families in claims for benefits.

To schedule an online appointment with a VA-accredited DVS staff member who can represent you in your claim, contact DVS at claims@veterans.nyc.gov or 212-416-5250.

Housing Veterans During the Pandemic

DVS continued to house homeless veterans throughout the pandemic. Despite not being physically in shelters, our Veteran Peer Coordinators (VPCs) worked with veterans to identify potential housing options and complete the necessary steps to move into a new home. The agency was able to house 183 veterans in 2020, an increase of approximately 18% compared to the previous year.
