The Fight Against COVID-19

ADVISORY:
Vulnerable New Yorkers Need to Stay Home

Dave A. Chokshi, MD, Commissioner of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygienehas issued an advisory urging vulnerable New Yorkers to stop all nonessential activities. People over 65 years and those with underlying health conditions are encouraged to stay home as much as possible. The advisory states:

"To protect yourself, your household members and your communities against the spread of COVID-19, you are hereby advised to limit activities outside your home, except leaving home to travel to work or school, or for essential purposes including medical care, grocery shopping or pharmacy necessities."

On Tuesday, 12/1, the city reported a seven-day average rate of positive test results of 4.14%, the highest since June. 1,100 patients with the coronavirus are hospitalized in NYC, more than double the total from three weeks ago.

Veterans Needed for Vaccine Trials

Serve in the fight against COVID-19. Join the search for a vaccine.

James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx is looking for veterans to participate in clinical trials for the single-dose COVID-19 vaccine developed by Johnson and Johnson. Veterans who meet the following criteria are encouraged to volunteer:
  • frontline staff and essential workers
  • Black, Hispanic, and Native American volunteers
COVID-19 has impacted minority communities at higher rates than the rest of the population. The more participants of color, the better researchers will understand if this vaccine is safe and effective for those who need it most.

Get Tested ASAP

If you traveled or participated in any indoor gathering over the holidays, you may have been exposed to COVID-19. Get tested ASAP. Find a free testing site here

#GiveBloodNYC

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a decrease in blood donations needed to treat hospitalized patients. The city currently has a three-day supply of donations; an ideal blood supply is seven days.

To increase donations, the New York Blood Center is launching the “Give Blood NYC" campaign.
Those who donate can enter to win one of 50 prizes; winners will be randomly selected each Monday between December 7th and January 4th. To enter:

  • schedule an appointment to donate blood here
  • officially enter the contest here
  • while donating, take a selfie and tag the New York Blood Center on social media with the hashtag: #GiveBloodNYC

Feeding Veterans in Need

One of the largest concerns facing New Yorkers during the pandemic is food insecurity.

To address this need, DVS partnered with
GetFoodNYC to deliver meals to homebound veterans.

DVS is also working with the NYS Division of Veteran Services and the Campaign Against Hunger, to distribute 350 to 400 HelloFresh food kits to veteran households per week.

Request food.

To learn how to volunteer to prepare meal kits, contact DVS at connect@veterans.nyc.gov

Helping File VA Claims

DVS is assisting veterans with filing VA claims. Have questions about education, disability, and survivor benefits? Contact claims@veterans.nyc.gov.

Housing Veterans During the Pandemic

DVS has been working with homeless veterans throughout this pandemic to ensure that they are in safe, secure housing. DVS was able to house 183 veterans in 2020, an increase of approximately 18% compared to the previous year.
