Statement from
DVS Commissioner James Hendon

“Every four years on January 20th, the citizens of our country – no matter their age, gender, class, political affiliation, religion, or race – gather to honor the inauguration of President of the United States’.

Today, Former Vice President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. and US Senator Kamala Devi Harris raised their hands and swore to faithfully execute the Office of the United States and preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution to the best of their ability as our new President and Vice President.

This swearing-in is one link in the peaceful transition of power that dates back to our nation’s founding. On this day, we also celebrated a historic first. Kamala Harris is the first female, the first Black, and the first South Asian American to be elected Vice President.

President Biden and Vice President Harris take office at a moment when our country is facing perilous crosswinds and some of the most significant challenges in recent history, including a pandemic, the impacts of climate change, a gutted economy, and a deeply divided United States.

We send them well wishes as they begin this daunting task and re-pledge ourselves to help improve the lives of the Veterans in our city, state, and country.”

- DVS Commissioner James Hendon
