NYC Primary Elections

New York City Primary Election Day
Your Local Polling Place
Tuesday, June 25  6am – 9pm

 
Next week's primary day will consist of a few key races and several local judicial contests. Democrats in Queens will elect a nominee for district attorney to run in November's general election and multiple candidates are challenging Councilwoman Louis, who won a special election in May to fill Public Advocate Jumaane Williams’ Brooklyn seat.

Military Registration and Voting Deadlines:
  • June 24 - Last day to apply personally for Military ballot for primary if previously registered
  • June 24 - Last Day to postmark Military ballot & it must be received by BOE by July 2nd.

All registered voters can participate in Tuesday's election as long as they’re enrolled with the party holding the primary. For everything you need to know about election day including candidate information, finding your polling place, and accessibility, visit Vote NYC

In this episode we chat with stalwart of the NYC veteran community, Joe Bello. Bello talks about the mentoring he received from Vietnam veterans, his commitment to continuing their legacy of advocacy, and about how he sees himself as a bridge between generations of veterans.

Joe Bello serves as Secretary of the New York City Veterans Advisory Board. He is a US Navy veteran and has been an active veteran advocate and organizer in NYC for more than two decades.

SI CTV's "In Honor Of"
 
DVS Outreach Coordinators Monique Rada & Eileen Barcene were guests on Staten Island Community Television's In Honor Of. The two spoke with co-hosts Ed Salek & Paul Dietrich about the experience of women veterans, transitioning to NYC, and resources available to Staten Island veterans.
 
CUNY-IBM Watson Social Impact Challenge
 
DVS Associate Director Jason Loughran mentored a group of students at the College of Staten Island (CSI) whose suicide prevention algorithm won first prize in the CUNY-IBM Watson Social Impact Challenge. The CSI-DVS team beat out 25 other teams with over 200 students participating.
Pride Storytellers
 
DVS collaborated with our friends at The Generations Project and SAGE Vets to kick off Pride Month at the New York Historical Society. We celebrated the untold stories of the LGBTQ+ Movement at this cross-generational show featuring LGBTQ veterans from before, during, and after Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
 
USS New York
 
DVS Deputy Commissioner Roth joined Mayor de Blasio aboard the USS New York to greet the ship's crew of Marines and Sailors and welcome them to NYC for Fleet Week 2019. 
Side By Side: Celebration of Service
 
Team DVS's newest Assistant Commissioner Adam Connolly and his team spent the day at Rockefeller Plaza engaging with service members, veterans, family members and supporters during Northwell Health's Side By Side event. 
Admiral's Welcome Breakfast
 
Deputy Mayor Phil Thompson & City Council Veterans Chair Chaim Deutsch joined DVS in welcoming Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard leadership at the annual Fleet Week Welcome Breakfast held at the historic Tweed Courthouse.

The Mission Continues Service Leadership Corps
 
Apply today to be a part of The Mission Continues next cohort of the Service Leadership Corps. SLC is a multidisciplinary six-month program that serves as an opportunity for veterans to build new skills and further develop their leadership. The experience includes four in-person weekend-long sessions, local team-based work, and a virtual curriculum. Corps members work individually and in small groups, collaborating with local organizations to drive positive change within their communities.

Team DVS couldn't be more thrilled about the news that Mayor de Blasio has nominated our very own Deputy Commissioner Jeff Roth to be the new Chair and Commissioner of the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC). Jeff’s nomination will be submitted to the City Council this month for its advice and consent in what we fully expect to be a seamless confirmation process.

As Chair and Commissioner, Jeff will oversee the largest private for-hire ground transportation industry in the nation, serving as head of the agency, its nine member board and approximately 600 employees. He'll preside over TLC’s regular scheduled public meetings and build on the agency’s ongoing efforts to provide equitable transportation services and safe streets for all New Yorkers.
De Blasio appoints veteran affairs expert as new Taxi & Limousine commissioner

Mayor de Blasio on Monday announced the nomination of Jeff Roth, deputy commissioner of the city Veterans’ Services Department, as the next commissioner of the Taxi & Limousine Commission.

Court allows a class-action lawsuit against VA for the first time
Military Times
A federal court for the first time will allow a class-action lawsuit against the Department of Veterans Affairs to move ahead, potentially opening the doors for a host of similar cases against the bureaucracy. 

David Bellavia to be the first living Iraq War veteran to receive the Medal of Honor
Task & Purpose
The White House announced that Bellavia's Silver Star will be upgraded to the MoH making him the first living Iraq War veteran to receive the medal. During the second battle for Fallujah in 2004, Bellavia single-handedly rescued an entire squad, wiped out an insurgent stronghold and saved several members of his platoon.

The first part of a three-part series looking at the plight of veterans exposed to atomic radiation testing. The second part details the multiple types of exposure vets have had to endure. The third looks at how the dangerous cleanup scarred troops for life. 

Legislation to provide benefits for 'Blue Water' Navy vets heads to President’s desk
Associated Press
The Senate passed the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act last week sending it to the president's desk. The bill's passage would ensure “Blue Water” Navy vets get benefits after their exposure to Agent Orange. During the Vietnam War, the U.S. military sprayed Agent Orange to remove foliage which had devastating health effects.
