Upcoming Workshops for
Veteran Business Owners

In celebration of National Small Business Week, we are spotlighting upcoming virtual workshops from our Veteran Business Leadership Association (VBLA) initiative designed to teach veteran business owners how to grow their businesses, transfer their military skills to entrepreneurship, and apply for government certification programs:

May 19th: Growth Strategies for Veteran-Owned Companies

The VBLA's May 19th workshop will teach veteran business owners strategies to take their companies to the next level, and will highlight resources and certifications they can use to grow and expand their businesses. The workshop will also cover strategies that other veteran-owned companies have used to successfully navigate the government contracting space. Register here.

May 26th: Government Contracting Strategies for Veterans

The VBLA's May 26th workshop will teach veteran business owners how they can do business with federal, state, and city government agencies. Veterans will get a deeper understanding of the government procurement process and how to access prime and subcontracting opportunities. The workshop will also cover how they can certify your company and strategies for securing your first government contract. Register here.

June 2nd: Turning Your Military Skills into a Business

The VBLA's June 2nd workshop is designed for veterans who recently separated from the military and are looking to transfer their skills to entrepreneurship. The workshop will focus on military skills translation, types of skills that are transferable to business ownership, and franchising for veterans. Veterans with a new business idea or looking to buy an existing business are encouraged to attend. Register here.

Honoring Travis Mills

Retired US Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills spent the 10th Anniversary of his “Alive Day” in New York City! DVS Deputy Commissioner Paul Vallone joined his celebration in Times Square to welcome him to NYC and to thank him for his bravery.

Travis Mills, of the 82nd Airborne, was critically injured on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan by an IED while on patrol, losing portions of both legs and both arms. He is one of only five quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries. Today, he leads the Travis Mills Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists Post-9/11 veterans who have been injured in active duty service.
