NYC Opposes Cuts To SNAP And Calls On Congress To Maintain Or Increase SNAP Funding Levels
  • 1.8 million people living in New York City, including 560,000 children and 530,000 older adults, rely on Farm Bill nutrition programs like SNAP to buy healthy food.
  • Congress reauthorizes the Farm Bill every five years. With the current bill expiring on September 30, 2024, and the reauthorization process for the 2023 Farm Bill underway, SNAP stakeholders have a critical opportunity to advocate for policies that protect and strengthen SNAP.
  • The Adams Administration and its coalition of advocates and stakeholders are calling on Congress to oppose cuts to SNAP and to maintain or increase SNAP funding levels.
  • SNAP dollars also service as an economic engine for local and regional food businesses and farms. In 2023, $5 billion in SNAP funds were distributed and used in NYC alone.

Disability Income for Veterans Will No Longer Disqualify Them From Rental Assistance
Homeless veterans denied federal rental assistance because their monthly disability checks from the Department of Veterans Affairs exceeded income limits will now be able to receive the housing subsidies through a joint program run by the VA and Department of Housing and Urban Development. WASHINGTON — Veterans whose monthly disability checks from the Department of Veterans Affairs disqualified them from receiving federal housing subsidies based on income restrictions will become eligible for the rental assistance under a rule change announced Thursday.

Changes to the Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing program — jointly run by the VA and the Department of Housing and Urban Development — will provide the rental vouchers to homeless veterans previously denied the subsidy because their monthly disability checks exceeded income limits, according to the VA.

“For a very small percentage of homeless veterans, the amount of VA service-connected benefits received due to the severity of their disabilities results in the veteran being over the low-income limit,” Terrence Hayes, the VA press secretary, said Thursday.

A veteran with a 100% disability rating who has a spouse and child as dependents receives approximately $49,000 in disability compensation annually, according to the VA.[READ MORE...]

 A Message From Mayor Adams:

Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.

Thanks to the Adams administration’s efforts, New York continues to be the safest big city in the country — with crime down for the seventh straight month in a row. Keeping our city safe means investing in summer programming that brings young people together and gives them the resources to thrive. Last week, we announced that our administration is investing another $2 million to expand programming and hours across youth initiatives in underserved neighborhoods like our Saturday Night Lights program that engages young people across 140 locations. Earlier this week we joined NYPD's 52nd Precinct for National Night Out to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community.
