The National Veteran Art Show: Journeys Onward
Exhibiting at the Salmagundi Club until July 26th
The Coast Guard Art Program (COGAP) uses fine art as an outreach tool for educating diverse audiences about the Coast Guard. COGAP art provides visual testimony to the unique contribution the Service makes to the nation in its multifaceted roles as a military, humanitarian and law enforcement organization. Art from the program is exhibited at museums around the country. It is displayed in the offices of members of Congress, cabinet secretaries, senior government officials and other military services and Coast Guard locations nationwide.
As part of the Salmagundi Club of New York’s on-going dialogue with the military community, Journeys Onward is a powerful and inspiring exhibition that showcases the art and accompanying words of military Veterans or their family members, shedding light on their unique experiences, both shared and individual. Their impact and intensity may be hard to grasp for those outside the military community. The exhibit seeks to be a catalyst for conversations between and within the military and civilian communities.

Post-9/11 Fallen Service Member Memorial Open Call for Artists
The City of New York seeks artists interested in creating a public monument that honors the lives and legacy of the Service Members who died during combat activities in support of Overseas Contingency Operations (Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn, Inherent Resolve, and Freedom’s Sentinel combined) associated with the Global War on Terror. If you are such an artist, then please APPLY to this open call.
The memorial will also serve as a permanent declaration of “Thank you” and “Welcome Home” to our Post 9/11 Veteran community. The Post 9/11 Veteran community includes, but is not limited to: all who served, those sustaining hidden and non-hidden wounds, those who died for reasons that originated in military service who are not acknowledged by the Defense Department as being combat casualties, those who were not able to return home, the loved ones of all previously mentioned groups (Gold Star Families and Blue Star Families), supporters and allies. This project will serve as an eternal testament to their service by also creating a site for future commemorations and remembrances that engage the local community, Veteran Service Organizations, and New Yorkers who wish to learn about these hometown heroes.

Veterans with combat-related injuries rallied near the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday to urge lawmakers to finally act on a long-stalled proposal to allow all veterans full access to military retirement pay and Department of Veterans Affairs disability benefits.
Despite wide bipartisan backing, the Major Richard Star Act has languished for years, increasingly frustrating the veterans who are losing thousands of dollars in benefits that could help them support themselves and their families.
"Even before I medically retired, I got another job because I needed to provide for my wife, and at that time, we welcomed our first child right after I retired," said Ryan Kules, an Army veteran who lost his right arm and left leg in an improvised explosive device blast in Iraq in 2005. "So, I had a growing family and needed to get back into the workforce. And if I had had that additional income that I had earned, I would have been able to take some more time to adjust, but I didn't have a choice." [READ MORE...]

A Message From Mayor Adams:
Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.
New York City isn’t just coming back — we are back. We have once AGAIN set the all-time record for the most jobs in New York City history, cut Black unemployment by 26% since the start of our administration, and broken the record for the most small businesses in our city. Last month, we announced a $112 billion budget that will build on that success and uplift working-class New Yorkers by investing in programs that make our city more affordable. It will invest $100 million to reimagine our early childhood education system and support working parents; invest $58 million in our city’s libraries and fully fund our cultural institutions that attract tourists and longtime New Yorkers alike; and help connect New Yorkers to good-paying jobs through our in-person hiring halls and online jobs portal.
