Post-9/11 Fallen Service Member Memorial Open Call for Artists
The City of New York seeks artists interested in creating a public monument that honors the lives and legacy of the Service Members who died during combat activities in support of Overseas Contingency Operations (Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn, Inherent Resolve, and Freedom’s Sentinel combined) associated with the Global War on Terror. If you are such an artist, then please APPLY to this open call.

The memorial will also serve as a permanent declaration of “Thank you” and “Welcome Home” to our Post 9/11 Veteran community. The Post 9/11 Veteran community includes, but is not limited to: all who served, those sustaining hidden and non-hidden wounds, those who died for reasons that originated in military service who are not acknowledged by the Defense Department as being combat casualties, those who were not able to return home, the loved ones of all previously mentioned groups (Gold Star Families and Blue Star Families), supporters and allies. This project will serve as an eternal testament to their service by also creating a site for future commemorations and remembrances that engage the local community, Veteran Service Organizations, and New Yorkers who wish to learn about these hometown heroes.

NYS Senator John Liu inducted Flushing resident Ryan Su into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame

Albany, NY - State Senator John Liu inducted Flushing resident Ryan Su into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was established in 2005 to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves in both military and civilian life.

Ryan Su served in the United States Army from 2012 to 2015 as an E-4 Specialist. During this time, he amassed a variety of experience as an Infantryman, Intelligence Analyst and Anti-Armor Specialist. His service, although cut short by a medically honorable discharge following a training accident, was marked by his sincere commitment and recognition by the Army. He was awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the American Defense Service Medal (2013), the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (2012), and the Army Service Ribbon. In 2023, he was honored with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, a testament to his ongoing commitment to community service.  [READ MORE...]

 A Message From Mayor Adams:

Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.

New York City isn’t just coming back – we are back. We have set the all-time record for private-sector jobs in New York City history and cut Black unemployment by 26% since the start of our administration. To build off of that success, we’ve kicked off our ‘Spring Jobs Sprint,’ and we’re bringing public- and private-sector job opportunities and career services to economically-disadvantaged communities through our hiring halls, which we have now held in all five boroughs over the last two weeks. Here at DVS, we are teaming up with our friends at NYC SBS to offer a wide variety of free and high-quality services to help start, operate, and grow your veteran small business in New York City.
