New York Fleet Week 2024
36 years of "Celebrating Those Who Serve"

NORFOLK, VA (Navy Region Mid-Atlantic) – Fleet Week New York (FWNY) returns to New York City from May 22-28 with two U.S. Navy ships, three U.S. Coast Guard vessels, and four U.S. Naval Academy Yard Patrol boats (YPs). Additionally, NATO allies from Germany will join the week-long celebration. Ships from the U.S. military will participate in the Parade of Ships on Wednesday, May 22.

Now in its 36th year, FWNY is the city’s time-honored celebration of the sea services. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the citizens of New York and the surrounding tri-state area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and witness the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. Some veterans who received other than honorable discharges for offenses that include misconduct, questionable behavior or homosexuality will be able to apply for health care and benefits at the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA officials announced Thursday.

The VA is expected to amend its regulation regarding what is known as "character of discharge," or type of discharge, by eliminating a barrier for veterans kicked out for being gay. It also will create an exception for those discharged for misconduct or problems that may be related to mental health issues stemming from combat exposure, discrimination, sexual assault and more.

According to the VA, the department will consider a former service member's length and quality of service, as well as any other confounding issues, to determine whether a veteran is eligible for health care and benefits. [READ MORE...]

Perelman Performing Arts Center:

An American Soldier

Beginning May 12 at Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC), An American Soldier tells the powerful true story of Army Pvt. Danny Chen. To help bring accuracy in the opera's storytelling, the production brought on military consultants including Army veteran Gordon Penn. After he was honorably discharged from active duty in 2012, Gordon Penn attended Fordham University to study painting and writing. Later, while studying to be a playwright at Columbia University he met An American Soldier writer David Henry Hwang. Penn has used his military experience to craft his own plays as well as to provide his expertise to theatrical productions. More information about An American Soldier at link.pacnyc.org/veterans
