Another Year, Another Milestone: Celebrating 8 Years of Serving NYC Veterans

To honor the sacrifice of New York City Veterans, the City of New York created the Department of Veterans' Services (DVS) on April 8th, 2016, making DVS the first standalone City agency in the country dedicated to serving Veterans and their families.

From empowering Veteran business owners and entrepreneurs, to addressing food insecurity among veteran and military families, our agency has always endeavored to support our nation's heroes. We've honored Vietnam Veterans, provided crucial support for transitioning service members, facilitated housing solutions for veterans in need, and much more. At every turn, our commitment remains unwavering – to serve those who've served us, ensuring their well-being and success when they return home.

As we reflect on our past accomplishments, we also eagerly anticipate the work ahead, knowing there are still challenges to overcome and opportunities to seize in our mission to serve and empower New York City veterans.

Team RWB: Navy's Own Paul Johnson Transcontinental Run Finishes Sunday in NYC

Paul Johnson–Active Duty Navy Officer and Team RWB member–is finishing his 3,000 mile transcontinental run in Times Square this Sunday.

Raising awareness for mental health support and as a fundraiser for Team RWB, Paul will have run 51 days straight when he begins his day on April 21st.

If you're looking to run with or cheer Paul on as he makes his "victory lap" in NYC, he will tentatively begin crossing the GWB at 1:00 PM and arrive at Times Square at 3:00 PM.

Supreme Court gives some military veterans more generous educational benefits
The pediment of the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Tuesday sided with a decorated veteran of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq in a protracted fight with the government over 12 months of G.I. Bill educational benefits.

The court ruled 7-2 that the Department of Veterans Affairs improperly calculated the educational benefits for James Rudisill, a retired Army captain who lives in northern Virginia.

Rudisill, who’s now an FBI agent, is in a category of veterans who earned credit under two versions of the G.I. Bill. One version applied to people who served before the Sept. 11, 2001, attack. Congress passed new legislation after Sept. 11.

But Rudisill served both before and after the attack, including tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Each program gives veterans 36 months of benefits, and there’s a 48-month cap. Rudisill thought he had 10 months of benefits remaining under the old program, plus another year in the new system. But the VA denied the additional year. [READ MORE...]
