Tomb Guard Makes Last Walk and Earns Badge
Tomb Guard Earns Badge After His Final Watch

U.S. Department of Defense
By Kevin M. Hymel, Arlington National Cemetery Historian

Conducting a final walk at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a high honor for a Tomb Guard assigned to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as "The Old Guard," as is earning the Tomb Guard Identification Badge. However, to do both on the same day is a rare event. That's just what happened to Army Staff Sgt. Thomas Tavenner on March 11, 2024.

At noon, when Tavenner completed guarding the Tomb, he walked to the southern end of Memorial Plaza, where the ceremony's host, Army Spc. Wyatt Stearns, told him "Staff Sgt. Thomas Tavenner, for the last time fall out." Instead of leaving the plaza, Tavenner handed his rifle to a waiting Tomb Guard and returned to the center of the plaza, where a sergeant first class, along with Tavenner's parents and grandfather, awaited him.

Tavenner took off his sunglasses and gloves and gave them to the sergeant, who, in return, handed Tavenner five red roses. Tavenner shook his father's hand and hugged his mother, giving her a rose. Then, in the disciplined cadence the Tomb Guards are known for, he walked to the Tomb of the World War I Unknown, dropped to one knee, and laid a rose at its base. He did the same for the Vietnam War, World War II and Korean War Unknowns. [READ MORE...]

 A Message From Mayor Adams:

Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.

Every New Yorker deserves a safe, affordable home. That’s why the Adams administration financed a record number of affordable homes last year, set records for the most new supportive homes, and, just last week, unveiled another key part of our administration’s historic “City of Yes for Housing Opportunity” proposal to let faith-based organizations and non-profits create much-needed housing on their properties and convert old buildings into new homes. Here at DVS, we’re hosting community engagement sessions on housing, disability claims and more to make sure hard-working NYC Veterans know and understand the benefits they are entitled to so they can afford to live in our city.

Community Building Art Works:

Memorial Day Painting Project

Community Building Art Works (CBAW) is a charitable organization that builds healthy and connected communities where veterans and civilians share creative expression, mutual understanding, and support through workshops led by professional artists.

In honor of Memorial Day, they're creating a collaborative painting--where everyone who registers will be assigned to paint (or create) a portion of the larger painting. This year's facilitators are Joe Merritt, Shaun Smith, and Valerie Acosta, all Veterans and all professionals in the Art space.

For more information and to register (free), visit their eventbrite.
