POW/MIA Recognition Day
Today, New York City honors the service members who have not yet come home and stands with the families who still wait. We will continue to say their names and keep the faith—until all are accounted for.
CineVet | NYC Veteran Film Showcase
⭐ Filmmaker Spotlight ⭐

Let's keep it rolling with our next four highlighted filmmakers for this year's CineVet Film Showcase! These artists embody the values, camaraderie, and creative vision that we seek to uplift.

Sean Ryan, Realm of Unknowns - Sean Ryan is a writer and director from Staten Island, New York. Ryan discovered his uncharted writing talents during his five years of military service after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. His writing explores "self-identity through paradoxical circumstance" which has led him to recognition by Screencraft, Outstanding Screenplays, and more.

Kevin Resnick, I Am the Warrior - Kevin Resnick is an award-winning writer, director, actor, and film instructor who served in the U.S. Air Force. Resnick’s innate flair for comedy allowed him to make a successful living as an actor in New York, where he starred in several acclaimed films on the festival circuit, receiving Best Actor Nominations for his work on four occasions.

Liz Mealey, Opalescent - Liz Mealey is a filmmaker currently earning her MFA in Cinematography from the American Film Institute Conservatory in Los Angeles. As a cinematographer, she approaches each project with curiosity and elasticity to develop a meaningful visual language that resonates with audiences on an emotional level.

Tim Yao, A Ranger Works Here - Tim Yao is an Army Veteran and filmmaker in the greater Los Angeles area with over 17 years of video production experience. Currently, he is self-employed and collaborates with various brands including We Are The Mighty and USAA. His current work includes projects with KitchenAid, the U.S. Army, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Veterans benefits and burials would continue in government shutdown, but other services could be affected
Burials at national veterans’ cemeteries — including Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso, Texas — would continue during a federal government shutdown. But maintenance of the cemetery grounds and placement of headstones would be among the services deferred. (Fort Bliss Public Affairs)

WASHINGTON — If the federal government shuts down after midnight Sept. 30 over a funding impasse in Congress, the Department of Veterans Affairs would keep sending veterans their monthly pensions and disability payments on time.

VA hospitals, outpatient clinics and the 24-hour Veterans Crisis Line — dial 988, plus 1 — that takes calls from suicidal veterans would stay open without interruption, along with the primary veterans contact center — at 1-800-MyVA411. Burials at national veterans cemeteries would proceed as well.

The VA sought to reassure veterans and their families this week that core services and benefits for veterans would be protected in a government shutdown. [READ MORE...]

A Message From Mayor Adams:
Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.
Making our city affordable means growing the number of jobs, small businesses, and affordable homes in our city. The MMR showed total private-sector employment rose for a fourth consecutive year, 2 percent up to 4.22 million, which is nearly 20 percent more than it was in the fiscal year before we came into office. Additionally, in total, more than 2,500 minority- and women-owned businesses (M/WBE) were newly certified or recertified, bringing the total number of certified M/WBEs to over 11,300 — an over 2 percent increase from the last fiscal year. Last fiscal year, the Adams administration also created and preserved over 33,000 total units of affordable housing across the city’s housing portfolio — a 15 percent increase from the previous year. And applications for childcare increased 68 percent from the previous year to 70,000 submitted through MyCity, including a 26 percent increase in new applications and a nearly five-fold increase in recertification applications. These numbers speak to the success of our administration’s approach to growing our city’s economy.
