WASHINGTON — Thousands of financially distressed veterans at risk of foreclosure will become eligible for federal assistance under a new program signed into law Wednesday that allows them to defer monthly mortgage payments temporarily without losing their homes.

The VA Home Loan Program Reform Act authorizes the Department of Veterans Affairs to create a “permanent partial claims program” that gives veterans a second chance to stay in their homes, according to the bill’s supporters.

Under the program, the VA buys a portion of the veteran’s debt and secures a lien on the property, according to the bill. The veteran does not have to pay off the claim until the home is sold or refinanced. [READ MORE...]

A Message From Mayor Adams:
Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.
Our administration works every day to make our city more affordable for working-class families. We’ve already provided free broadband internet to hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers with Big Apple Connect, and now we’re doubling down with “Liberty Link,” which will deliver internet to thousands of additional New Yorkers in 100-percent affordable housing buildings at little to no cost to tenants. And, with the school year inching closer, we’re meeting another critical need in our city by announcing the first 40 new after-school sites that will provide 5,000 more after-school seats to our city’s students this fall. This is the first step in achieving universal after-school programming for students and families, and another example of how New York City remains the best place to start and raise a family.
