From the Marines to the Ferry: One Veteran’s Quick Thinking Helped Save a Life
After 15 years of military service, Andrew Ehrenfeld found his next mission on the Staten Island Ferry—with a little help from DVS.
Deckhand Andrew Ehrenfeld (center) receives awards from Borough President Vito Fossella and District Attorney Michael J. McMahon for helping rescue a passenger who went overboard.
NYC DVS | July 11, 2025
By DVS Communications Team

When a passenger fell overboard on the Staten Island Ferry this June, Andrew Ehrenfeld—a U.S. Marine Corps veteran with 15 years of service—was part of the crew that moved swiftly to respond. Working in sync with his team aboard the Samuel I. Newhouse, Andrew helped coordinate a life-saving rescue that brought the man safely back to shore. For their actions, the crew was recently honored by Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella and District Attorney Michael McMahon.

Andrew’s story started long before that day—when he made the decision to join the Marines and serve his country. After completing 15 years of honorable service, he turned to our Director of Veteran Transition, Nicole Orlando, to help him take his next step. That connection led him to the Staten Island Ferry, where his training, discipline, and sense of duty continue to serve the people of New York City.

We're proud to stand behind veterans like Andrew as they find new ways to serve their city. Read more about Andrew and the rescue in the Staten Island Advance.
Whether you’re exploring your next move or ready to jump in, our team is here to help. You can connect with our employment services directly through VetConnect—or reach out to Nicole Orlando, our Director of Veteran Transition, for guidance.

A Message From Mayor Adams:
Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.
Our administration works every day to make our city more affordable, and with Mayor Adams’ $116 billion “Best Budget Ever,” we’re investing in the services that make life safer and more affordable here in NYC, and that improve quality of life. Our new budget has investments to put NYC on the path to universal childcare for low-income families if our new pilot is successful, invests more in schools, invests in cultural institutions and libraries, provides funding for legal services for immigrants, funds programs to help New Yorkers suffering from severe mental illness, funds major infrastructure projects, and so much more, all while keeping NYC on the path of strong fiscal management and fulfilling earlier promises like cutting NYC personal income taxes for low-income New Yorkers, creating a universal after-school program, and investing nearly $25 billion in capital to create more affordable housing. At DVS, we’re doing our part by helping veterans and their families access housing assistance, apply for benefits, and connect with services—from rental support and legal advocacy to resource navigation.
