Memorial Weekend Flag Planting

On May 24th, for Memorial Day weekend, we'll be honoring our Veterans by planting flags at their graves. There are over 27,000 Veterans buried at Cypress Hills National Cemetery and we will be sure to honor every last one, so no hero is left behind.

📅  May 24th (rain or shine)
⏰ 9am Start
📍 Cypress Hills National Cemetery
625 Jamaica Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11208

Things to Consider:

  • Wear comfortable clothing and dress accordingly for the weather.
  • We suggest you wear gloves as the flags are on wooden poles and can give you splinters as you insert the flags into the ground.
  • Feel free to bring little carts or backpacks to carry as many flag bundles as possible.
  • Bring water/hydration.

As the nation celebrates the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe, Veterans Affairs officials have added about 210,000 names of veterans killed or lost overseas — including about 93,000 WWII veterans — to the department’s expanding online memorial project.

The Veterans Legacy Memorial was launched in 2019 and creates websites recognizing the lives of deceased veterans, allowing relatives to update the online memorials with details for their service, post-military work and family history.

The scope of the project now includes more than 10 million names and has roughly doubled in the last two years, with the addition of millions of veterans buried in private cemeteries worldwide to existing lists of individuals interred at VA and military sites. [READ MORE...]

A Message From Mayor Adams:
Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.
Our administration works every day to create a more affordable city and our “Best Budget Ever” invests in the programs that will give working families a chance to get ahead. Last week, we announced a new $331 million investment to make after-school programming universal — bringing our total annual investment to provide “After-School for All” to $755 million by the start of the 2027-2028 school year. We’re also investing in child care, health care, CUNY, our libraries and cultural institutions, and so much more as we make New York City the best place to raise a family. And here at DVS, our Military Family Advocate (MFA) Program--a collaborative initiative between NYC Public Schools and our agency--was created to enhance engagement with Veterans and military families. The program aims to be the first point of contact, connecting them to vital services that they may not know exist. Visit nyc.gov/vetmfa to learn more.
