Eligible veterans get easier access to military bases under new rules
Eligible veterans will have an easier way to get into installations for certain benefits such as commissaries and exchanges. (DOD)

The more than 4 million veterans who are eligible for certain on-base benefits may have an easier time getting into military installations, under new rules announced by the departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.

The new procedures allow these veterans and their eligible caregivers to enroll for recurring access to an installation, so that once they’ve completed that process, they can go directly to the installation gate and present the same credential to enter the installation at subsequent visits.

Under the new rules that took effect Nov. 1, veterans can use their VA-issued Veteran Health Identification Card, VHIC or their REAL ID to enroll for recurring installation access. Those who don’t have a VHIC, as well as eligible caregivers, can use their REAL ID Act-compliant driver’s license or non-driver’s identification card to enroll for installation access at the installation visitor center.  A Message From Mayor Adams:

Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.

Our administration works every day to create a more affordable city, and that starts with ensuring New Yorkers have pathways to careers and good-paying jobs. Last week, we announced the first-ever civil service exams for multiple public safety positions. New Yorkers can now apply for several career opportunities with just one exam and one application fee of $47, a sharp decrease from the previous $209 fee. The first of three exams DCAS will offer will help fill nearly 900 available positions for school safety agents, traffic enforcement agents, special officers, and sanitation enforcement agents. This makes applying for public safety-related jobs more affordable for applicants, allowing for New Yorkers to build successful futures for themselves and their families with the stability and benefits of government employment. As part of a a joint effort to remove barriers for employment for Veterans and their families and make it easier to add them to the City’s workforce, spouses of United States Armed Services Veterans are entitled to a one-time waiver of the application fee required to apply for the City of New York's civil service examinations. This is an extension of the previous policy which grants an unlimited number of fee waivers for Veterans on all exams for City employment.
