The City of New York Unveils Shortlist of Artists for Post-9/11 Fallen Service Member Memorial
Chosen by an advisory panel composed of individuals who reflect diverse facets of New York City’s Veteran community, from an impressive pool of dozens of submissions, the shortlisted artists have been recognized for their unique vision, creativity, and dedication to this project. Their work will contribute to creating a permanent site of reflection, remembrance, and education—one that will resonate with all New Yorkers, regardless of the extent of their connection to the events of 9/11 and the conflicts that followed.

“As Gold Star parents, this process has been profound. Each artist we reviewed carried a deep sense of respect for our Post-9/11 fallen service members, and selecting the finalists was both a difficult and emotional task,” said the Ollis family, Gold Star parents to Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis. “We look forward to seeing each of the artists’ final concepts and are hopeful their designs will not only honor those who gave their lives but also offer a space for reflection and healing for families like ours.”

Shortlisted Artists: The final artist or team will be selected through the City’s Percent for Art commissioning process, with the winning concept announced in early 2025.

VA partners with Uber to drive veterans to medical appointments, but travel in rural areas remains a problem
John Polk, an Army veteran and volunteer with the Disabled American Veterans, picks up veteran William Bash of Oak Creek, Wisc., on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024, to drive him to his medical appointment at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center. (John Polk)

WASHINGTON — Army veteran John Polk has been a volunteer driver for 10 years with Disabled American Veterans, giving veterans in Wisconsin rides to doctor appointments at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center and other health care facilities run by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“If the DAV did not pick up these veterans, they would have a hard time getting to the doctor,” he said.

Without help from Polk, 77, and other volunteer drivers, veterans who do not have transportation — a particular problem in rural areas — would be stranded and unable to make their VA appointments. [READ MORE...]

 A Message From Mayor Adams:

Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.

Thanks to the Adams administration’s efforts, New York continues to be the safest big city in the country. But safety is about more than dropping crime numbers; we’re also protecting New Yorkers from the growing threat of climate change. Last week, the city completed the first section of the East Side Coastal Resiliency Project ahead of schedule and under budget, a major milestone in the effort to protect more than 110,000 Lower East Side residents, including 28,000 in public housing, from future storms and high tides and protect billions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure and property in the area.
