U.S. Marine Corps. Veteran and Purple Heart Recipient, Dakota Meyer, named Grand Marshall of 2024 New York City Veterans Day Parade

NEW YORK (WABC) -- U.S. Marine Corps. veteran Dakota Meyer has been named the grand marshal of the 2024 New York City Veterans Day Parade.

Meyer was presented with the ceremonial sash aboard the USS Intrepid on Manhattan's west side on Monday.

The 36-year-old was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during a battle in Afghanistan by President Barack Obama in 2011.

Meyer is also a Purple Heart recipient.

"You think about the day I received the Medal of Honor for, it's not a day of heroism, it's not a day of bravery, it's not a day of any of those things, it's a day what everybody is capable of if they believe in a cause that's bigger than themselves and they love people," Meyer said.

Veteran Bernard Murphy

After three years of working from home post-pandemic, the effects of isolation were taking a toll on service-connected disabled Veteran Bernard Murphy. Seeking relief, he bought a virtual reality (VR) headset from a friend and explored the potential for immersive technology to help tackle his loneliness.

Murphy’s transformative experience inspired him to help fellow Veterans who are suffering from similar feelings of depression and isolation, primarily in underserved areas.

“There are about 13,400 Veterans living at or below the poverty line in New York City. Two of my friends are in that category,” he explained.

He has made it his personal mission to reach these individuals and introduce them to the possibilities that come from putting their heads in headsets and letting them know that VA Immersive is working to help make this technology more available to Veterans across VA. [READ MORE...]

 A Message From Mayor Adams:

Each week DVS shares a brief update about how our administration is getting stuff done for New Yorkers.

Our administration works every day to create a more affordable city for working-class New Yorkers, and the MMR shows we are helping put billions of dollars back into your pockets. We helped 25 percent more families sign up for subsidized child care and brought the cost of subsidized child care down from $55 a week when we took office to just $5 today for a family of four earning $55,000. We helped 20 percent more New Yorkers without insurance enroll in NYC Care to get low- or- no-cost health services as well as 13 percent more jobseekers register with our Workforce 1 system to find a good-paying job.
