New Museum Waterfront Experience

The USS Constitution Museum, in partnership with the Boston Planning & Development Agency, recently created a space for community use at the base of Dry Dock #2 in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Locals and visitors can enjoy a new waterfront patio with seating and shade behind the Museum, while colorful banners affixed to the building promote the Museum experience.
Colorful and informative new banners now decorate the light poles leading from the Museum to the ferry, featuring eye-catching modern and historical images of the Museum, USS Constitution, and the Charlestown Navy Yard.
Visitors taking in the waterfront view of Boston Harbor and the city skyline can also explore the Navy Yard more closely with new “telescopes to the past” installed along the boardwalk. These telescopes feature historical images of each location at a different point in time, allowing visitors to experience the past while enjoying the present.
In the future, visitors will also view charts detailing rising sea-levels in the context of the Navy Yard’s history. The charts will show tide levels in Boston Harbor through history – and how high those tides might rise in the near future – giving the public a deeper understanding of how global climate change impacts local communities. In the future, a functioning tide meter will be placed near the ferry terminal.
