Help Us Sail Twice As Far!

Sailing a ship like USS Constitution takes hard work, steady perseverance – and perfect timing. Her captains knew how a sudden breeze could fill her sails and send “Old Ironsides” racing ahead – if you acted in time. Like those strong winds, a unique matching opportunity will make your gift today go even further as we share and celebrate Constitution’s remarkable legacy. A generous friend of the Museum has pledged to match all gifts up to $50,000 until March 31, 2018. Giving today will double the impact, ensuring that everyone can experience Boston history hands-on. Here at the USS Constitution Museum, visitors of all ages have the chance to set out on a voyage of discovery and fun aboard “Old Ironsides.” Your support today will help us sail twice as far!

On February 20th, USS Constitution commemorated the 203rd anniversary of her victory over HMS Cyane and HMS Levant during the War of 1812. Vice Admiral Phillip Sawyer, Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet spoke about Captain Charles Stewart's leadership and his crew's discipline during the battle and their legacy's long-lasting effects on today's sailors. Following the ceremony the USS Constitution Museum hosted a luncheon where VADM Sawyer spoke to guests on the importance of the Seventh Fleet's posture in the Pacific.

Women's History Month: Women Making Waves
USS Constitution Ordinary Seaman Moses Smith recalled seeing four to five women aboard Guerriere “engaged in passing powder, and other munitions of war.” As women were not allowed to be sailors at that time, these women were presumably wives of warrant officers who became swept up in the action as the battle ensued. The story goes that among Constitution‘s more than 50 Marines in the Guerriere battle, one was a woman named “Louisa Baker,” disguised as “George” Baker.

One Mystery Leads to Another
The world of the museum curator or historian is akin to that of a detective’s world. Just like detectives, curators and historians spend their days digging into the past, gathering clues, and, finally, assembling the clues into a story or solution that solves the original mystery – or so the curator or historian hopes.
