Celebrate the Anniversary of the World Cruise at this Year's Collections Benefit

Thursday June 13 | 6:00 - 8:30 PM
USS Constitution Museum

On May 29, 1844, USS Constitution set forth on what would become a two year voyage around the world. It was the Ship’s first and only circumnavigation, touching at 24 ports of call before returning to Boston in 1846.

Join us for a talk with Prof. Robert J. Allison, a leading expert on Constitution’s World Cruise. Get a rare glimpse of items from our Collection that “Mad Jack” and members of his crew acquired during their travels and chat with our curators to get the inside scoop.

Sample global cuisine from some of “Old Ironsides’” exotic ports of call. Raise a glass as you mix and mingle with fellow history enthusiasts, world travelers, sailors, and Museum leadership. The event concludes with the Ship’s evening colors at 8:22 pm.

Come Explore the Mysteries Behind Celestial Navigation

Saturday June 22 | 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
USS Constitution Museum

In the GPS age, steering a ship by the stars can seem like a mystical lost art. How did ships possibly manage to cross huge expanses of ocean and still make their intended landfall? What do you actually see when you look through a sextant? What do latitude and longitude really represent? Spend Saturday morning with the Museum’s public historian and expert navigator to explore the mysteries behind celestial navigation. Learn about the skills that ship captains relied on and hear about the difficulties ships faced in the eras before GPS.
