Fair Winds & Following Seas

"Fair winds and following seas, sir. We have the watch." - CAPT Isaac Hull

We echo the world in bidding farewell and honoring George H.W. Bush. His ties to Massachusetts go back to his beginning: born in Milton and a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover. After graduation, Bush enlisted in the U.S. Navy following the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941. His service to this country continued as a congressman, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, 41st President, and father of the 43rd.

Thank you for your service, Mr. President. Your dedication to the United States and to the defense of freedom will not be forgotten. Fair winds and following seas.

Now through Friday, December 7, we invite you to visit the Museum to share a memory and express condolences for President George H.W. Bush. We will mail your messages to the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.

Thanks to your support on #GivingTuesday, we can now cover transportation costs to bring more than seven Boston Public Schools field trips to the Museum. That's over 180 students who now have the chance to discover history where it really happened - and we couldn't have done it without you! Thank you so much to everyone who donated and shared the excitement of exploring maritime history with our students!

If you haven't already, there's still time to make your end-of-year contribution to help bring even more students to the Museum as we sail ahead into 2019!

The National Parks of Boston, USS Constitution Museum, and USS Constitution, cordially invite you to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. The ceremony will take place adjacent to USS Cassin Young, a Fletcher-class destroyer named for Commander Cassin Young, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions during the attack. We will honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the United States and those who continue to do so today. A wreath will be laid from the stern of USS Cassin Young and a luncheon will follow in the USS Constitution Museum, courtesy of the City of Boston’s Veterans Services Department.

Welcome to the Fleet!

On Saturday, December 1, the U.S. Navy welcomed their newest Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, USS Thomas Hudner. The ship is named in honor of Captain Thomas Hudner, a navy aviator who deliberately crash-landed his plane into a Korean hillside on December 4, 1950, to save downed pilot, Ensign Jesse Brown. Though Hudner was unable to save Brown, his heroism earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor.

To kick-off the commissioning, we partnered with the USS Thomas Hudner Commissioning Committee in welcoming New York Times bestselling author Adam Makos to the Museum on November 29. Adam shared personal anecdotes, photos, and recordings of his time with CAPT Hudner while he wrote Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice which tells the inspirational story of then Lieutenant (junior grade) Tom Hudner and Ensign Jesse Brown, and the Marines they fought to defend.

Congratulations to the USS Thomas Hudner Commissioning Committee on a successful commissioning and welcome to the USS Thomas Hudner!

LEARN

"I'll be home for Christmas..."
When reading USS Constitution‘s early log books or journals, December 25th, as the Christmas holiday, frequently goes unremarked upon. In 1798, for instance, December 25th seems to have passed as just another day with the crew of Constitution loading supplies in Boston and getting the ship ready for her next deployment to the Caribbean Sea for the Quasi-War with France.

Deck the Decks
During Constitution’s cruise around the world between 1844 and 1846, the Ship’s crew spent two Christmases far from home. It was only natural that the sailors tossing on the briny deep or languishing at anchor in a foreign port would take time to make merry and remember loved ones on the holiday.

OWN A PIECE OF HISTORY

We are proud to offer you the opportunity to own a piece of American history with this limited edition medallion! This medallion is made from copper sheathing that once clad USS Constitution, America's Ship of State, which defended the ideals and values of a free and independent nation. Inspired by our collection, it is illustrated with images celebrating the earliest years of USS Constitution’s history.
On the front is a rendering of USS Constitution based on a circa 1803 painting by Michele Felice Cornè. Painted approximately six years after the Constitution’s launch in 1797, it is the earliest known artistic depiction of the Ship that is still in existence.
On the back of the medallion is an artist concept rendering of USS Constitution’s original figurehead, a large full-length statue of the Roman hero, Hercules. The epitome of strength, Hercules holds the document for which Constitution is named.
