Art on the Trails to Freedom

Now - October 1

Come see three amazing art installations this summer at the Charlestown Navy Yard! This program, hosted by the National Parks of Boston and the USS Constitution Museum, features work from three Boston-based artists: a sculpture by Somerville resident Chris Frost, a sound installation by Boston-based composer Maria Finkelmeier, and a mixed-media installation by Yale School of Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts graduate Marlon Forrester.

These installations are part of the National Park Service’s Art on the Trails to Freedom, a collaborative project that invites artists from New England to create public works of art that explore Boston’s historical themes and activate select locations on Boston’s Freedom Trail and Black Heritage Trail with new theme-based public programming and temporary public art installations.

Celebrating American Independence

USS Constitution fires a 21-gun salute toward Fort Independence during her Fourth of July Cruise. [Photo by Greg M. Cooper]
On July 4, 2018 USS Constitution went on her Fourth of July underway cruise in commemoration of the 242nd Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This was Constitution's first Independence Day cruise in three years as she was in dry dock undergoing her 2015-2017 restoration.

"Old Ironsides" traveled to Fort Independence on Castle Island and fired a 21-gun salute with the 101st Field Artillery from the Massachusetts National Guard returning the salute. An additional 17-gun salute was fired as Constitution passed the U.S. Coast Guard Station, the former site of Edmund Hartt’s Shipyard where Constitution was built and launched.

Guests aboard two Boston Harbor Cruise boats followed "Old Ironsides" around Boston Harbor while enjoying a lunch buffet and hearing about the history of USS Constitution and the Harbor from USS Constitution Museum staff.
Allison Gamble and Carl Herzog, USS Constitution Museum staff, smile for the camera as they cruised alongside "Old Ironsides".
The family-fun continued in the Museum as visitors spent their Fourth of July learning about USS Constitution and naval history.

OWN A PIECE OF HISTORY

We are proud to offer you the opportunity to own a piece of American history with this limited edition medallion! This medallion is made from copper sheathing that once clad USS Constitution, America's Ship of State, which defended the ideals and values of a free and independent nation. Inspired by our collection, it is illustrated with images celebrating the earliest years of USS Constitution’s history.
On the front is a rendering of USS Constitution based on a circa 1803 painting by Michele Felice Cornè. Painted approximately six years after the Constitution’s launch in 1797, it is the earliest known artistic depiction of the Ship that is still in existence.
On the back of the medallion is an artist concept rendering of USS Constitution’s original figurehead, a large full-length statue of the Roman hero, Hercules. The epitome of strength, Hercules holds the document for which Constitution is named.
