“Huzza! Her sides are made of iron!"
Today we celebrate USS Constitution's victory over the British frigate HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812.
During the engagement, Constitution’s thick hull proved resilient to enemy cannonballs, and a sailor was heard exclaiming, “Huzza! Her sides are made of iron! See where the shot fell out!”
After intense combat, the severely damaged Guerriere was forced to surrender.
Constitution, for her impressive strength in battle, earned the nicknamed “Old Ironsides.”

Celebrate National Dog Day and Guerriere, the terrier who was on the USS Constitution! This beloved canine, named after the famous battle between the Ship and HMS Guerriere, was a favorite among the crew and even helped with tasks at sea. Learn more > >

Red Arrows Fly in Boston
Visit the Museum today and enjoy a spectacular view of the Red Arrows flying in the skies of Boston! The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team will perform for ten minutes along the Boston waterfront at around 11:00 a.m. ET.
