USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world. According to CDR Tyrone G. Martin, “the turnaround cruise [likely] evolved from very modest beginnings when, in the 1950s, the Ship randomly was turned around at her berth to evenly weather her wooden hull.” But according to Boston-area myth, in order for "Old Ironsides" to remain a commissioned vessel in the United States Navy, she must get underway in Boston Harbor at least once every year.

INTERPRETING CONSTITUTION

With over 221 years of service, USS Constitution has a fascinating and far-reaching history. Her crew is learning how to share that history with the public through a twelve-week training course led by Museum staff and in collaboration with the Naval History & Heritage Command Detachment Boston. This program is designed to introduce sailors to the Museum's resources and equip them with the tools to interpret different parts of the Ship and her legacy.
Throughout April, crew members will learn about the history of the Charlestown Navy Yard. They will take time to reflect on how visitors would have different experiences visiting the Ship in the Navy Yard over its long history.
In the early days, especially during the War of 1812, visitors flocked to visit the famous warship whenever it dropped anchor after a cruise. At the time of the Ship’s 100th birthday in October 1897 it was first opened for extensive public visitation; the side rails on the Ship had to be cut to accommodate a gangway for the public; 900 sailors joined in a parade to the Navy Yard for the celebration.

We are proud to offer you the opportunity to own a piece of American history with this limited edition medallion! This medallion is made from copper sheathing that once clad USS Constitution, America's Ship of State, which defended the ideals and values of a free and independent nation. Inspired by our collection, it is illustrated with images celebrating the earliest years of USS Constitution’s history.
On the front is a rendering of USS Constitution based on a circa 1803 painting by Michele Felice Cornè. Painted approximately six years after the Constitution’s launch in 1797, it is the earliest known artistic depiction of the Ship that is still in existence.
On the back of the medallion is an artist concept rendering of USS Constitution’s original figurehead, a large full-length statue of the Roman hero, Hercules. The epitome of strength, Hercules holds the document for which Constitution is named.
