UN 75 Co-Facilitators for Intergovernmental Declaration
On January 6 the President of the General Assembly, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande of Nigeria, announced the appointment of Amb. Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani of Qatar, and Amb. Anna-Karin Eneström of Sweden to lead the intergovernmental process towards a declaration for the “Commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations.”
In a letter congratulating the ambassadors, UN2020 and Together First recalled the provisions of the UN75 Modalities resolution that “Emphasizes the need to engage civil society and youth in all activities” and are currently exploring practical arrangements for consultations among CSOs and the intergovernmental negotiating process for a UN75 political declaration.
Successful launch for Alliance for Multilateralism
In September, approximately 50 Foreign Ministers attended the formal launch of the Alliance for Multilateralism. Led by Germany and France, the alliance is an effort to mobilize a like-minded group of states in response to the erosion of support for international cooperation and a rules-based international order.
At the launch event governments pledged their support for some or all of a handful of measures, each with a detailed “joint position.” These include:
*Call for Action to strengthen respect or International humanitarian law and principled humanitarian action
*Joint position on climate and security
*Gender at the Center Initiative
*International Partnership for Information and Democracy
*Paris Call for trust and security in cyberspace
*Declaration by the Alliance for MultilateralIsm on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS)
