UN2020: Global Town Hall, December 9th

In recognition of UN75, this global town hall will serve to energize civil society to engage with, and recommit to, the United Nations in light of the adoption of the Declaration on the commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the UN and to ensure the success of the Decade of Action for the SDGs while addressing the impacts of the global pandemic.

As a contribution to the UN General Assembly’s Heads of State and Government Special Session in Response to COVID-19 (December 3-4, 2020), the Doha Forum Report 2020 examines the leadership deficit in multilateral cooperation toward both the coronavirus pandemic and other existing and emerging global challenges, including runaway climate change, rising political violence, menacing cyber-attacks, and growing inequality within and between countries.

The Process to Choose the Next UN Leader Should Start Now

This time five years ago, Mogens Lykketoft, the president of the United Nations General Assembly, was working with members of the Security Council to create the first open process to appoint the next secretary-general, after the adoption of General Assembly Resolution 69/321. In 2021, the process will begin again to select the UN’s secretary-general for the term starting in 2022. But will it be inclusive?
