The Governments of Rwanda, Lao PDR and Uganda Launch Violence Against Children Survey Reports

Dear friends,

At Together for Girls, we believe in the enormous potential of quality data to effect change and inform evidence-based policy. Which is why I’m thrilled to share that over the past few months, three additional countries have launched their Violence Against Children Survey (VACS) reports. Congratulations to the governments of Rwanda, Lao PDR and Uganda for achieving this tremendous milestone! There has also been great progress in other countries. Just last week, Honduras hosted their Data2Action workshop, launching preliminary findings from their VACS.

The VACS process is led by national governments, with technical support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as part of the Together for Girls partnership. The new reports share invaluable information about sexual, physical and emotional violence in childhood and young adulthood. As part of our model, the data from the VACS will inform corresponding national action plans, which drive change to prevent and respond to violence against girls and boys. In June, Lao PDR simultaneously launched their report and action plan - helping drive momentum to address violence in their country.

Our team at Together for Girls was honored to attend the Government of Uganda's launch of the VACS report. Read an overview of our experience here.

Additionally, you can explore the data from all three countries via our map visualization or by checking out our country fact sheets. You can also read more about the VACS process here and check out all 11 of the publicly-available VACS reports here.

President of Honduras Hosts Data2Action Workshop

This month, Honduras hosted a Data2Action workshop in Tegucigalpa, to begin the process of using newly available Violence Against Children Survey data to inform a comprehensive and multi-sectoral response. To demonstrate the Government of Honduras' commitment to addressing violence against children and youth, as well as gender-based violence, the opening keynote was given by President Juan Orlando Hernández himself. During his remarks, President Hernández highlighted the importance of the issue, noting that "now is the time to take more coordinated and comprehensive action to end violence against children and youth."

Honduras’ survey includes a groundbreaking new module on the relationship between migration and violence against children and youth, and is the first country in Latin America to conduct a Violence Against Children Survey.

UNICEF Launches HIV Report During AIDS 2018

During the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam, UNICEF launched a groundbreaking new report on women’s leadership in the HIV response for children. The report, "Women: At the Heart of the HIV Response for Children," highlights the fact that although girls and women bear the brunt of the disease, they also have been instrumental in leading and shaping the HIV response in the past few decades.

Dr. Daniela Ligiero contributed an essay to highlight the power of PEPFAR’s DREAMS Initiative and the importance of targeting adolescent girls as part of the HIV response.
