There is no way any words can possibly encapsulate all the bewilderment and loss of the past year. But mostly, when I reflect on the past few months, the theme that recurs is that of uncertainty and the inevitability of that uncertainty.
Whether it's the intensity and speed with which the coronavirus epidemic changed life almost overnight, or the surprising traction of the Black Lives Matter movement, or the persistence (and indeed growth) of Donald Trump’s support, 2020 has been, as far as the Better Politics beat is concerned, about seeing the patterns in the chaos. They are always there.
What I have learned over the past few months is that politics is a rational business. What we see is the spikes and anomalies, but underlying them is usually a coherent logic.
