Hello <<First Name>>,

This year, a global pandemic changed our lives overnight, incredibly divisive politics is normal now, and on top of everything, we're continuing our steady walk towards irreversible climate catastrophe.

It's hard to believe that, amidst all this, there's still, inarguably, so much progress. But there is.

PROGRESS IN IDEAS AND POLICIES

In the midst of the biggest societal shakeup since the second world war, the tide is turning against the ideology that has dominated our world for the last 40 years: neoliberalism.

Economists, philosophers and politicians have spent decades fighting the cynical dogma that allowed neoliberalism to prevail; that most people are selfish. And they've been working on real alternatives.

Now, ideas that were once dismissed as radical and unthinkable are becoming viable alternatives. From higher taxes for the super-rich to a universal basic income – the time for radical change is right now, writes Progress correspondent Rutger Bregman.

The Black Lives Matter movement is different this time around because 50 years of hard-fought progress has won more people of colour the platform to protest and more solidarity with that protest, writes Better Politics correspondent Nesrine Malik.

From Congress, to cable news, to TikTok, there are now more people of colour with more influence and power to amplify the demands for racial justice than at any other time in history. And, white people's attitudes towards racial equality have progressed as well.

The result? US American voters’ support for Black Lives Matter increased over the two weeks since the protests by almost the same vector as it did in the last two years. This is how change happens.

PROGRESS ON THE CLIMATE EMERGENCY

From huge shifts in renewable energy, to landmark court rulings, and politicians pulled by activists into the green new age, there is so much to be hopeful for when it comes to the climate emergency.

Why are we talking so much about progress? Because a core belief that's at the foundation of our journalism is that you, our members, are not served best by the latest hype or outrage, nor by a chronicle of all the problems in the world that seem unfixable.

You're served best by sharing knowledge and ideas about the fundamental changes hidden in plain sight that will make tomorrow better than today.
Have a good day today – and if you enjoyed this newsletter, forward it on to a friend, family member, or colleague 📤! The best thing about progress is sharing it.

Until tomorrow!
