Fellow Hoosier,

Indiana is better than this.

Political campaigns always include tough criticism of candidates. But the vile and disgusting attacks used in the 5th District congressional race set a new low. These attacks have been made by candidates and supported with gleeful abandon by people who claim to be journalists but really have no interest in anything other than clicks and controversy.

The non-partisan National Journal describes these attacks as, “thinly-veiled xenophobic and sexist". The Journal goes on to specifically call out Beth Henderson’s ad attacking me for not being born in America. The Journal also cites Carl Brizzi’s misogynistic attacks that claim that I cannot be a successful business person…because I am a woman.

Now these candidates are invited to spew their hateful views on local news programs and blogs, without any rebuttal.  Indeed, local television station staff were caught on a hot mic making derogatory, ignorant comments and misrepresenting my heritage as well.

So far, the outrage from the media has not existed. In all likelihood, because the media believes that it is ok to direct hate against women…as long as the woman targeted is conservative.

Since the beginning of these hateful attacks, I have received an outpouring of support. People are disgusted. Again and again, they make the same point. America is a country built by legal immigrants. First, second and many generation immigrants are who we are as a people. It is the Constitution and the idea of freedom and liberty that makes us great – not where we were born, or what race, gender or religion we are.  I am an American by choice. I came here legally. I am proud of my success--success that I owe to America--the Land of the Free, because of the Brave. To hate people who came to this country legally, is un-American. Beth Henderson has chosen to wrap herself in that hate. She is going to lose because Hoosiers are better than that.

Carl Brizzi lives in a world where women can’t be successful on their own merit and hard work.  That sexist view is not American either.  He can’t imagine a world where I have done work auditing publicly traded Fortune 500 companies, or that I made smart real estate investments, or that where my husband and I operate a farm.  Henderson, Brizzi and their friends in the press believe that Indiana is a hate-filled place that will reject a strong conservative woman and legal immigrant.  They are WRONG.

Tomorrow is Election Day.  Voting in America allows every citizen the power to stand up for their beliefs and to hold the powerful to account. I have absolute faith in God. I also have faith in Hoosiers, who have allowed me to pursue the American Dream. Indiana will reject  these “xenophobic and sexist” attacks. Just as people voted for me to go the State Senate and fight for conservative change, I am asking to go to Congress and cut through the BS and provide real conservative leadership.

Whether it’s the failure of Marion County to process absentee ballots for this election, or failure of leadership that has allowed peaceful protests to be hijacked by violent extremists,  it is clear we need strong leaders locally and in Congress who will defend our values and our way of life.  This country has given me everything in life, I owe it my best, and that’s why I am running Congress and asking for your vote.

Sincerely,

Victoria Spartz
