The Criterion Collection
The Runner (1984, Amir Naderi)

Childhood takes on mythic dimensions in one of the defining works of postrevolutionary Iranian cinema. Inspired by director Amir Naderi’s own boyhood, The Runner is lit from within by Madjid Niroumand’s electrifying performance as a young orphan fending for himself on the streets of a port city, determined to rise above his circumstances—working odd jobs, passing time with friends, learning to read—and running, always running, toward the future. Water, fire, the human body in motion: in hypnotic images of lyrical power, Naderi finds unexpected glory in the world of a boy suspended between modernity and elemental natural forces as he chases his own path forward.

Special Features:

  • New 2K digital restoration, supervised by director Amir Naderi, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
  • New conversation between Naderi and filmmaker Ramin Bahrani

Arrow
Dark Water (2002, Hideo Nakata)

After terrifying audiences worldwide with the blockbuster J-horror classic Ring and its sequel, director Hideo Nakata returned to the genre for Dark Water, another highly atmospheric, and critically acclaimed, tale of the supernatural which took the common theme of the "dead wet girl" to new heights of suspense and drama. Based upon on a short story by Ring author Koji Suzuki, Dark Water follows Yoshimi, a single mother struggling to win sole custody of her only child, Ikuko. When they move into a new home within a dilapidated and long-forgotten apartment complex, Yoshimi begins to experience startling visions and unexplainable sounds, calling her mental well-being into question, and endangering not only her custody of Ikuko, but perhaps their lives as well. Beautifully shot by the same cinematographer as Ring and Pulse, and featuring an especially unnerving sound design, Dark Water successfully merges spine-tingling tension with a family's heart-wrenching emotional struggle, creating one of the very finest and most unsettling contemporary Japanese horror films.

Special Features:
  • 4K (2160p) Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible)
  • Original lossless 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio
  • Optional English subtitles

Janus Contemporaries
Lynch / Oz (2022, Alexandre O. Philippe)

The themes, images, and cultural vernacular of Victor Fleming’s The Wizard of Oz continue to haunt David Lynch’s filmography—from his early short The Alphabet to his recent television series Twin Peaks: The Return. Arguably, no filmmaker has so consistently drawn inspiration—consciously or unconsciously—from a single work. Is Lynch trapped in the Land of Oz? If so, what can we learn about his body of work by taking a closer look at how it intersects and communicates with that legendary fantasy? In turn, what do Lynch’s films have to say about the enduring resonance of one of America’s most beloved classics? Through six distinct perspectives, Alexandre O. Philippe’s Lynch/Oz helps us reexperience and reinterpret The Wizard of Oz by way of David Lynch, delivering new appreciations of both.

Special Features:
  • Meet the Filmmakers, a new interview with director Alexandre O. Philippe

The Soldier's Tale (1984, R.O. Blechman)

The Soldier's Tale is an animated classic by the renowned New Yorker illustrator R.O. Blechman, based on Igor Stravinsky’s 1918 composition. This poetic tale revolves around a young soldier’s return home, where he strikes a deal with the devil, trading his beloved violin for boundless wealth. Haunted by regret, the soldier sets out on a journey to reclaim his soul and rediscovers the life he left behind. As the soldier ventures into these alternate realities, Blechman’s simple pen-and-ink drawings explode into colorful fantasies. The film was a milestone in the marriage of animation and music (Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” was used to score one of the most memorable sequences of Walt Disney’s Fantasia). This 2K restoration of The Soldier’s Tale (from the filmmaker’s personal 35mm print) is accompanied by Blechman’s Christmas-themed short film No Room at the Inn.

Special Features:
  • Audio Commentary by Director R.O. Blechman, Animator Tissa David, and Associate Producer George Griffin
  • No Room at the Inn, a Short Film by R.O. Blechman
  • The Hand of R.O. Blechman, a Collection of Animated Shorts and Commercials

Saint Omer (2022, Alice Diop)

Bringing a documentarian’s sense of open-ended inquiry to her first narrative feature, writer-director Alice Diop constructs a morally and emotionally layered courtroom drama unlike any other. When she travels to Saint-Omer, France, to attend the trial of a young Senegalese woman (Guslagie Malanda) accused of murdering her infant daughter, novelist Rama (Kayije Kagame) finds herself shaken to the core by a case that proves to have profound resonances with her own life. Interweaving complex themes of mother-daughter bonds, immigrant alienation, and postcolonial trauma into a piercing portrait of two mysteriously connected women, Diop forgoes mere questions of guilt and innocence in order to plumb the unsettling unknowability of the human soul.

Special Features:
  • New 2K digital master, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack
  • New and archival interviews with director Alice Diop
  • Conversation between Diop and author Hélène Frappat

To Die For (1995, Gus Van Sant)

The all-American obsession with celebrity turns monstrous in this deliciously subversive (and disturbingly prescient) satire of our television-mediated, true-crime-obsessed age. In a career breakthrough, Nicole Kidman delivers a diabolical deconstruction of the girl next door as a local TV weather reporter whose perfectly perky facade belies a murderous heart, as her ruthless pursuit of fame ensnares three disaffected teens in a sordid, tabloid-ready scandal. Deftly deploying shifting perspectives, faux-documentary interviews, and a supporting cast featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Dillon, and Casey Affleck, director Gus Van Sant adds provocative layers of meaning to this darkly funny examination of suburban sociopathy.

Special Features:
  • New 4K digital restoration, approved by director Gus Van Sant and director of photography Eric Alan Edwards, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack
  • One 4K UHD disc of the film presented in Dolby Vision HDR and one Blu-ray with the film and special features

North Dallas Forty (1979, Ted Kotcheff)

The great, gruff Nick Nolte (48 Hrs., Lorenzo’s Oil) stars in this brutally honest, all-time classic sports film about one man’s rebellion against the bureaucratic, manipulative world of professional football. Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by former Dallas Cowboy Peter Gent, North Dallas Forty depicts Nolte as an aging ballplayer who, through a woman he meets (Dayle Haddon), is drawn away from the masculine, violent world in which he has lived so long. In doing so, he finds himself at odds with the team’s management (G.D. Spradlin, Charles Durning and Steve Forrest). Superbly play-called by director Ted Kotcheff (Billy Two Hats, First Blood), the excitement, humor and drama of North Dallas Forty is heightened by its meticulous attention to the details of a football player’s private and public life and its authenticity on the playing field. Co-starring country music legend Mac Davis with Bo Svenson and Dabney Coleman.

Paint Your Wagon (1969, Joshua Logan)

A raucous western comedy starring screen legends Clint Eastwood (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, High Plains Drifter) and Lee Marvin (Cat Ballou, Monte Walsh), Paint Your Wagon is punctuated by a classic score by the great Lerner and Loewe (My Fair Lady, Gigi), including “They Call the Wind Maria,” “I Talk to the Trees” and “Wand’rin’ Star.” The story of a gold-mining boomtown full of brawny men centers on the work-and-play partnership of prospectors Ben and Pardner (mischievous Marvin and earnest Eastwood). They share everything—the gold, the laughs, the songs…even their wife (spirited Jean Seberg, Breathless, Macho Callahan)! It’s the musical goldmine of ’69, directed by Joshua Logan (South Pacific, Camelot), shot by William A. Fraker (Bullitt, Tombstone) and adapted for the screen by Paddy Chayefsky (Marty, Network)!

The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun + Le Franc: Two Films by Djibril Diop Mambety (1999 / 1994)

Djibril Diop Mambéty, a towering figure in world cinema, is best known for his two features, Touki Bouki (1973) and Hyenas (1992, re-released in a new restoration by Metrograph Pictures in 2019). Yet these two extraordinary films tell only part of the story of the director’s enormous accomplishments in his too-brief life. The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun (1999) and Le Franc (1994) are masterpieces of the medium-length form, completed by Mambéty in his final years. They provide us a fuller picture of the elements that define his small, but perfect, filmography—a rich social vision, sly humor, and formal ingenuity. Mambéty initially meant for these films to lead off a trilogy to be titled “Tales of Ordinary People,” but sadly lived only to complete Le Franc and The Little Girl Who Sold The Sun.

Both films were restored in 2K by Waka Films in 2019 with the support of the Institut français – Cinémathèque Afrique and the CNC at Éclair Laboratories from the original negative.

Special Features:

  • Audio Commentaries for The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun and Le Franc by Film Scholar Boukary Sawadogo, Ph.D.
  • Cinema is Magic (2022, a documentary about Djibril Diop Mambety by Silvia Voser)

Radiance
The Bounty Hunter Trilogy

Before he made his name in 'Lone Wolf' and 'Cub' Tomisaburô Wakayama starred in this triptych of violent samurai spectacles that draw on James Bond and Spaghetti Westerns for inspiration yet feature the familiar style and blood-spattering action of the period.

In director Shigehiro Ozawa's (The Streetfighter) "Killer's Mission", Wakayama stars as Doctor (and spy-for-hire) Shikoro Ichibei, who is hired to prevent the sale of firearms to a hostile Shogun.

In Eiichi Kudo's (13 Assassins) follow-up, "The Fort of Death", Ichibei is hired on a Seven Samurai-style mission to protect a village of farmers from a ruthless Lord.

The final film sees Ozawa return for "Eight Men to Kill", in which Ichibei is hired to recover a cache of stolen gold from the government's mine. Featuring an array of weapons and gadgets that would make Q proud (with Ichibei supported by a band of helpers including fellow spies, Ronin and female ninjas), the Bounty Hunter films deliver action thrills galore and deserve to sit alongside the celebrated action epics that followed.

3 Godfathers (1936, John Ford)

Heralded as 'John Ford's Legend of the Southwest!' by M-G-M upon release, "3 GODFATHERS" is one of the most impressive collaborations between legends John Wayne and John Ford. The story tells of fugitive bank robbers Robert (John Wayne), William (Harry Carey, Jr.), and Pedro (Pedro Armendariz) stand at a desert grave. Caring for the newborn infant of a woman they just buried will ruin any chance of escape. But they won't go back on their promise to her. They won't abandon little Robert William Pedro. Director John Ford's retelling of the Biblical Three Wise Men tale remains a scenic and thematic masterpiece. Ford adds Technicolor® to his feature-film palette, capturing stunning vistas via cinematographer Winton Hoch, who would win two of his three Academy Awards® for Ford films. Again, populist-minded Ford asserts that even men of dissolute character can follow that inner star of Bethlehem to their own redemption.

Based on the oft-filmed 1913 novel by Peter B. Kyne, this Blu-ray presentation not only contains the 1948 M-G-M Technicolor triumph, but also as a "special feature" the rarely seen, earlier 1936 M-G-M production entitled "THREE GODFATHERS" starring Chester Morris and Lewis Stone, with both the 1936 and 1948 films each meticulously remastered in 1080p HD for unprecedented quality.

Special Features:
  • NEW 4K RESTORATION FROM THE ORIGINAL CAMERA NEGATIVE
  • Fully remastered and restored 1080p HD presentation of M-G-M's 1936 feature THREE GODFATHERS with Chester Morris and Lewis Stone, from a 4K scan of best preservation elements (TRT: 81 Minutes)
  • Original Theatrical Trailers for "3 GODFATHERS" (1948) and "THREE GODFATHERS" (1936)
  • Optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature

The Boob and Why Be Good? (1926, William A. Wellman and 1929, William A. Selter)

Two laugh-filled romps from the last years of Silent Cinema make up this Double Feature disc. Directed with the usual splash of skill by the great William A. Wellman, THE BOOB is a lampoon of Hollywood gangsters and cowboys. George K. Arthur stars as Peter Good, whose girlfriend has run off with a bootlegger, sending the hapless boob running after both. The story becomes a culture-clash farce that pits his hick heroism against the wiles of slick-haired gangsters and gin-soaked jazz babies. The film gave Joan Crawford one of her first important roles, as a tough but glamorous revenue agent who helps Peter save the day.

WHY BE GOOD? stars the magnificent Colleen Moore who captures the rebellious flamboyance of the era portraying Pert Kelly, a shopgirl who wins the heart of the boss' son (Neil Hamilton). The boss, however, doubts that Pert is virtuous. His love-struck son wonders if Dad could be right. So, he sets up a little test for his sweetie: He takes Pert to a raucous roadhouse, rents a private room and makes a most ungentlemanly suggestion. Will Pert be good? Or, with Prince Charming in her grasp, will she decide it's better to be bad? M-G-M's The Boob is presented with a joyous musical score written in 2003 by composer Arthur Barrow. First National's Why Be Good? Is presented with its original synchronized Vitaphone soundtrack with synchronized music and sound effects.

They Drive By Night (1940, Raoul Walsh)

George Raft and Humphrey Bogart share a driving ambition in legendary director Raoul Walsh's classic They Drive by Night, a feisty tale of brothers trying to make it as independent truckers. Ann Sheridan plays a truck-stop waitress dishing both the daily special and the patter, and Ida Lupino is a headstrong executive mixing business and romance with murder. With Bogart again riding shotgun en-route to leading-man stardom (which he would achieve the following year) and Raft at the wheel in one of his finest performances, this sterling example of Warner Bros. social-conscience filmmaking proved a study vehicle for both. It proved even more fortuitous for Miss Lupino: her courtroom breakdown scene made her an "overnight" sensation that landed her a contract with the studio.

Special Features:
  • NEW 4K RESTORATION FROM THE ORIGINAL CAMERA NEGATIVE
  • DIVIDED HIGHWAY-THE STORY OF 'THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT' - Fetaurette
  • Classic WB Short 'SWINGTIME IN THE MOVIES
  • LUX RADIO THEATER BROADCAST (6/2/1941) with George Raft and Lana Turner

Canadian International
Animation Night in Canada, Vol. 1

14 Oscar-nominated shorts from the National Film Board of Canada

Long celebrated for its groundbreaking achievements in animation, the National Film Board of Canada has earned international acclaim and dozens of Oscar nominations for its animated shorts. During a particularly fertile period between 1965 and 1985, the NFB played an instrumental role in the medium’s rapid evolution, breaking new ground with a wildly varied and inventive run of films that are alternately abstract, eerie, entertaining, poetic, poignant, and psychedelic. Goin' South (1978, Jack Nicholson)

Henry Moon (Jack Nicholson, Chinatown) is a cut-rate outlaw in post-Civil War Texas, convicted of bank robbery and property theft. Moon is sentenced to death by hanging in the town of Longhorn, a town that maintains an ordinance allowing for any condemned man to be freed from the gallows via marriage. Julia Tate (Mary Steenburgen, Clifford), a quiet virginal young woman with a secret gold mine, saves Moon from the gallows in an attempt to exploit him for free labor. With Moon intent on consummating his marriage to a virgin bride and Tate seeking to mine her hidden fortune, the two embark on an equally combative, comedic, relationship in the Old West.

The sophomore feature directorial effort from Jack Nicholson, following his counterculture comedy Drive, He Said in 1971, GOIN’ SOUTH is a commonly overlooked entry in Nicholson’s repertoire as an actor and filmmaker. Featuring gorgeous photography from noted cinematographer Néstor Almendros (Days of Heaven) and a talented comedic cast including John Belushi (Animal House), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), Danny DeVito (Wise Guys) and Ed Begley Jr. (Blue Collar), Cinématographe is proud to present Jack Nicholson’s wild western comedy on blu-ray and UHD for the first time in the world from a brand new 4K restoration of its original camera negative!

World War III (2022, Houman Seyedi)

The official Iranian entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2023 Academy Awards, and the Winner of the Orizzonti Awards for Best Film and Actor at the Venice Film Festival 2022, director Houman Seyedi’s savage, mysterious thriller/drama WORLD WAR III is one of the darkest, most enigmatic portraits of class inequality, desperation and murder since Lee Chang-dong’s BURNING and Bong Joon-ho’s PARASITE. Mohsen Tanabandeh delivers an unforgettable performance as Shakib, an anonymous day laborer still grieving the deaths of his wife and son who’s given a job guarding the set of a film about the Holocaust. When the lead actor playing (yes) Hitler is struck ill, Shakib is enlisted to wear the costume and mustache – and for the first time in his life, he has a little money, respect and a place to sleep. Unexpectedly, his sex worker “girlfriend” Ladan (Mahsa Hejazi) shows up, threatening to upset his tenacious hold on prosperity. When Ladan suddenly disappears during filming, it sets off a violent chain of events. What starts out as a dark satire of the Iranian film industry quickly evolves into a near-Hitchcockian thriller of the underclass struggling violently to be heard, to be seen – with an apocalyptic ending that is truly something to behold. Rated 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. In Persian with English subtitles.

Special Fearures:
  • Region A Blu-ray
  • New hour-long video interview with director Houman Seyedi and co-writer Azad Jafarian, moderated by Dennis Bartok of Deaf Crocodile (In Persian with simultaneous English translation)
  • New commentary by film critic Walter Chaw (Film Freak Central)
  • Blu-ray authoring by David Mackenzie of Fidelity In Motion

Vinegar Syndrome
Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965, Freddie Francis)

Five men, all strangers, board a carriage on a train from London to the town of Bradley, where they're joined at the last minute by a sixth - a mysterious, black-clad older gentleman who introduces himself as Doctor Schreck (German for “terror”, as he informs them). Bearing a stack of Tarot cards, Doctor Schreck claims to have the ability to read fortunes, and although some of the group are initially skeptical, it’s not long before his fellow passengers are asking him each in turn to relate what the future holds in store. Specters / Maya (1987 / 1989, Marcello Avallone)

As the close of the 1980s drew nearer, Italy continued to turn out some of the weirdest and wildest entries the horror genre had to offer - and this set of atmospheric offerings, SPECTERS (1987) and MAYA (1989), from director Marcello Avallone, are no exception! Mixing sex, mythology and bloody supernatural slayings in a dizzying blend sure to please fans of 80s terror everywhere, these sacrificial slashers are finally unleashed in their Blu-ray world premieres, newly restored in 2K from their original 35mm camera negatives by the high priests of horror at Vinegar Syndrome, alongside a treasure trove of new bonus material.

SPECTERS: Whilst excavating the catacombs at an archaeological site in Rome, a team of researchers make an astonishing discovery when nearby drilling work in the subway system causes a wall to collapse, revealing a passageway leading to a series of hitherto unexplored tunnels. Delving deeper into the subterranean labyrinth, the team uncover a cavernous tomb filled with ominous inscriptions, as well as strange, unidentifiable skeletons and a crude, sacrificial weapon. Little do the archaeologists realize that the uncovering of this burial chamber, long-since sealed off from the world, has unleashed an ancient evil intent on wreaking bloody havoc.

MAYA: Lisa, a young woman from New York, arrives in a small Mexican seaside town to identify the body of her father, a researcher into Mayan culture who has been brutally murdered in a sacrificial-style killing. Determined to uncover the truth behind her father’s death, Lisa decides to stay in town, where she learns about the local folklore and superstitions with the help of Peter, a young American and friend of her father. As more people are found dead, all slaughtered in a similarly gruesome fashion, and the town’s celebrations of the dead loom, could the legend of a vengeful and bloodthirsty Mayan king returning from the dead prove to be true?

* Although both SPECTERS and MAYA were initially finished with an English stereo soundtrack, for reasons we are unclear of, the left channel of both stereo tracks suffered extreme and intermittent ringing and hiss resulting in their only ever having been distributed in mono. Despite our efforts to rectify these issues, we found that the tracks were irreparable and are therefore presenting the sound in mono, in accordance with all previous versions.
