Park Avenue highlights; eyeglass collection; take our poll

August 2018

Summer is an ideal time to discover and explore the city’s different neighborhoods. Each has its own character, highlights, and offerings. This month, we’re focusing on the sustainable side of the Park Avenue area.

ROUX

This family-owned, French-themed restaurant is known not only for the food, but also for the drinks. Mother Robin Banister and daughters Paulina Swan and Ashley Swan-Abramson work together to create fresh and imaginative dishes for their patrons using local ingredients. The menu includes a variety of options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike.

The Red Fern

The Red Fern prides itself on offering vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-friendly options, all while using locally sourced or organic ingredients whenever possible. The menu includes entrees, sandwiches, salads, specials, fresh juices, smoothies, house-baked pastries, kombucha on tap, beer, and wine. You can even have your order delivered via GrubHub.

F. Oliver’s

Looking to shop somewhere that uses locally sourced ingredients whenever possible but is also focused on relationships with people? Look no further. F. Oliver’s products include olive oils, specialty oils, vinegar, and even skincare products. Bring in clean, empty balsamic vinegar and olive oil containers for a refill.

Apogee Wine Bar

This charming wine bar features a large selection of wines from local wineries. On warm summer nights, the proprietors make slushy wines, too. Plus, they serve desserts from the locally owned Scratch Bakeshop, and you’ll find the bar’s walls decorated with the works of local artists.

Park Avenue Pub

Park Avenue Pub serves a variety of wine and food with daily dinner specials. Reviews on Facebook, Yelp, and TripAdvisor highly recommend checking this cozy eatery with a neighborhood feel.

Half Pint

Half Pint is another Park Avenue gem. This Irish pub features a large and ever-changing beer selection. As a result, patrons have the opportunity to select two different beers for the price of one. Since parking can be tricky in the city, pick up a Pace bike in your neighborhood and ride it to the Park Avenue neighborhood. You can lock it up at the Pace bike station in front of Half Pint or use your bike to make your way down the street while you explore.

Hemp It Up!

Another small, family-owned business, Hemp It Up! is Rochester’s first hemp boutique. It carries a variety of quality, fair-trade goods made from hemp, including accessories, bath and beauty lines, fine papers and cards, twine and yarn, pet products, specialty food products, and cannabidoil (CBD) health supplements. Visit them for a chance to touch, taste, and sample some of the products!

Bartertown Collectibles

Looking for some vintage comic books, toys, or video games? Check out Bartertown Collectibles. This store houses a vast inventory of all of your childhood favorites. You can even bring in your old video games for appraisal.

The Bodymind Float Center

Floating is a new trend in relaxation. The float tank is dark and quiet, reducing sensory stimulation. This environment frees the brain from the bulk of its processing and prompts the production of theta waves. Rochester’s Bodymind Float Center also offers salt therapy, which helps to address respiratory ailments.

August Eyeglass Collection 👓

University Facilities and Services is collecting eyeglasses to be recycled this month. We are partnering with the Lions Eye Bank at Rochester, and the glasses will be sent to the Lions Club. There, program volunteers clean, sort, and package the glasses. Usable glasses are then sent to those in need, mostly in developing countries.

Drop off your glasses at the Flaum Eye Institute, located at G3070 in the Medical Center. Or use the intra-office mail program to send your glasses in a box or envelope to

University Mail Services
Box 270001
Rochester, NY 14627-0001

Check out the flier or email Amy Kadrie for more information.

Help Choose Our Next Quarterly Event ✅

Each quarter we host an event so Green Reps from across the University can gather together as a group. Thank you to all who attended our Zero-Waste Potluck! We had a blast seeing old friends, meeting new Green Reps, and sharing a delicious lunch on a beautiful summer day in Genesee Valley Park.

Now, we're asking for your input on our fall event. Participate in our poll to let us know if you prefer a swap for office supplies, a cooking class, or some other type of event.

Sustainability Superstar 🌟

Mary Ellen Liss, Purchasing Manager, Medical Center

Sustainability continues to take on a greater significance in today’s workplaces. Mary Ellen believes it’s important for people to do their part in changing how goods and services are purchased, consumed, and disposed of at work. This principle is a core value of hers, and she believes it is important that we all do what we can to preserve our planet for future generations.

As a purchasing manager for the University, Mary Ellen is able to align her personal values with her job by collaborating with coworkers and businesses, plus finance and procurement leaders, to direct the University’s purchases and contracts toward more sustainable goods and services whenever possible. Keep up the great work, Mary Ellen!

Know someone who’s made progress with sustainability on campus? Whether the victories have been big or small, we’d love to hear about them! Email us today.

Bonus Kudos to the Summer Sustainability Fellows

(Photo: Sofia Tokar)
How will climate change affect the health and well-being of City of Rochester residents? To answer that question, four undergraduate students in the College surveyed local residents at the Public Market as part of the inaugural Community-Engaged Summer Sustainability Fellows program. Guided by Katrina Smith Korfmacher, associate professor of environmental medicine, the sustainability fellows will present their findings to city officials this summer.
