RealTime E-dition
Header
Two highly experienced performers, Rakini Devi, studying at the University of Wollongong, and Steve Matthews at the University of Sydney, are well on their way to completing doctor of creative arts degrees. They tell us what motivated them to deepen their practices with intensive research, reflection on their art and the making of new works. The demands on them have been considerable and often isolating but have been met with determination and joy. That universities can provide artists with time, space and intellectual challenges that sustain, extend and revitalise practices is more than simply laudable; it connects the academy palpably with the arts community and the broader culture as artists take their findings to fellow practitioners and audiences. Also in this edition, don’t miss a witty and disorientingly engaging video that takes you out on the road — Runtime by Laura Hindmarsh (one of the MCA’s 2017 Primavera artists).

Namatjira
NAMATJIRA PROJECT: RIGHTING A WRONG         Dan Edwards thinks Sera Davies' multilayered, culturally alert documentary about Big hART's collaboration with the family of Albert Namatjira should inspire action to return the artist's copyright to them.
Rakini
THE GODDESS & THE DOCTORATE
Highly distinctive performer Rakini Devi engages with a frighteningly powerful Hindu goddess in Urban Kali, which she tells RealTime is at the centre of her near-completed Doctor of Creative Arts at the University of Wollongong.

CRITICAL VIDEO: RUNTIME BY LAURA HINDMARSH
Though our footsteps (and our lives) are digitally tracked to the millimetre, something feels "out of step, out of time," writes Elyssia Bugg of Laura Hindmarsh's GPS-misguided Runtime. Watch now, with headphones on.
Prevenge
REVENGE OF THE DISENFRANCHISED
“From a horror filmmaker riffing on her own experience of pregnancy with great immediacy, something vivid and unpredictable is born,” writes Katerina Sakkas of Alice Lowe who also stars in Prevenge.
Plunge
SPORT FOR ART'S SAKE
PLUNGE, a spectacularly immersive site-specific work from Kate Shearer, transforms the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, newly built for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, into a theatrical performance space, writes Kathryn Kelly.
Elyssia Bugg
CONRIBUTOR PROFILE: ELYSSIA BUGG
